3rd Trimester

Anyone else have sleep issues?

Week 40!! For the last 2 weeks or so when I try to sleep (doesn't matter what position or how many pillows) my arms fall asleep and hurt like hell! I toss and turn all night and hardly get a few hours of sleep. I got some arm splints today because I read towards the end of pregnancy water retention/baby position can really cause havoc and give you intense carpal tunnel, sooo I"m hoping I get some relief. Being this far along and being uncomfortable all day everyday-all I want is a good night sleep lol. This is my first baby, I really give props to moms with multiple kids. I can't imagine being pregnant and having to take care of 1, 2, 3 or more other kids!

  • Pregsomnia is completely common any time in pregnancy. Sad but true. Yours is amplified by carpal tunnel now, as is mine. It just sucks. Let us know how those braces work, please!
  • No carpal tunnel here...but there are many reasons why sleep is hard to come by at the end!  I think it's God's way of preparing you for sleepless nights up with baby ;)  Just do the best you can and know that it will be over soon and it will be well worth it!
  • I know how you feel! I'm at only 31 weeks and the carpal tunnel syndrome is bad enough that I am considering surgery. My dad's an orthopedic surgeon who does a lot of these, so I'm not taking it lightly, but I also know that when the numbness does not resolve by the evening it is a sign that I might be causing permanent nerve damage.

Mine's primarily in my dominant hand (typical for CTS) and I have tried propping up my arm, using doc-recommended wrist supports that I got off Amazon (which I'm about to give up on because they get so painful by 3am that I tear them off in my sleep), keeping my fingers straight, bending them, and now have a chamomile tea bag on my wrist to try to reduce the fluid. I am cutting down salt and increasing caffeine to reduce fluid as well.

The surgery is minor for non-pregnant people but would require either general anesthesia or a tourniquet and pumping my arm full of novocaine, neither of which I'm keen to do while pregnant.

I hope yours resolves once your baby is born, soon! Good luck!

  • My doctor recommended wrist braces to be worn as much as humanly possible for my pregnancy carpal tunnel and I've been told it should go away after birth.  Most of the numbness has gone away since I started wearing them a month ago and the pain is gone.

Doc also said surgery or water pills are not an option during pregnancy but an ortho may do steroid injections in the wrists as they shouldn't affect the baby.

Wrist braces are below, they came in 2 days.

I got 2 of these from my local grocery store (they're ambidextrous)

After dinner I wore them around the house and then to bed. I slept sooo much better and my arms felt better when I woke up. I did wake up a few times last night but it wasn't from arm pain-it was because of leg cramps LOL i can't win! But I definitely suggest getting some kind of splint and trying it out if you can. I know you can get splints anywhere-drug stores, walmart, target, amazon, etc. I took them off this morning to shower and do some stuff around the house, but I am trying to wear them as much as possible. @CubanPinky - the splint stabilizes your arm and wrist so the movement is limited and gives you lots of cushion. It keeps your muscles/ligaments in a neutral position.
  • I have carpal tunnel too, it sucks and wakes me up at night. Luckily I heard it goes away right after you give birth!

  • I had carpal tunnel while I was pregnant with my twins and it was terrible. In the middle of the night I was have to shake my hands over the side of the bed.

Just to prepare you, it doesn't go away as soon as you give birth. Mine took a good month before I got all feeling back in my fingers.

  • Ugh I was hoping itd go away fairly quick :-/ ...at least the splints are definitely helping :)
  • I've had carpal tunnel this pregnancy since early on ( like 15 wks). I use the splints when sleeping but find them too restricting during work and normal day though sometimes i wear in evening if they are too numb. I rarely sleep well- either uncomfortable, have to pee or just plain wake up. I think it is mother nature's way of preparing you for motherhood. :) Try the splints they do seem to help- I picked mine up at Rite Aid but you can buy them at any chain store, grocery store, pharmacy or what not. The prices ranged from cheap to very pricey- I went middle of the road and they are working alright.
