Pukey baby: give me the fast & dirty

So Tessa threw up tonight for the first time. She woke at 10pm screaming, and when I went to check on her she was covered in a huge pile of vomit and panicking. So sad to see :(

Within 30 min she puked twice more... the last time was just a huge wad of clear mucus. Seemed miserable and exhausted (though NOT noticeably warm, and I didn't check her temp) and fell asleep on me. I transferred her to the swing seat and she has been sleeping there for an hour and a half now.

Kiddo never really puked as a baby so this is uncharted territory for me.

I'm just going to bed next to her. Is there anything else I should do or be watching for? I don't want to deliberately wake her up to feed, but I'll nurse her whenever she awakens on her own. Am I supposed to let her drink as much as she wants? Less?

  • I don't think I have experience with this, but my instinct is to say frequent short nursing sessions.  As Poru said, this will keep her hydrated, but won't put too much into her sensitive tummy.

I hope she feels better soon.

Sullivan is a pukey kid anyhow but had an episode a few weeks ago where he vomited a ton through his nose and everything in bed, and gave us all a good scare, including himself. I would say the clear mucousy stuff toward the end is likely a lot of snot from crying and freaking out (at least, it was for us). Not to say you shouldn't be keeping a close eye but it may ease your mind a little!

I was really worried he was getting sick (the snot) but it turned out to just be an isolated incident. He drank a little extra at his next few feedings to rehydrate, but didn't get an extra feeding or feedings closer together than normal, and was just fine in the am. Hopefully the same for Tessa!

Eta: for us, more frequent feedings makes him more pukey. If we don't give him a solid two hours to let his tummy empty, it's no bueno in this house.
  • Sounds like you are through it but just incase it flares up again. My LO has a stomach bug a couple of weeks ago. Basically they told me to feed her less more often. We normally nurse every 2 hours- they said to switch to every hour and half the time on the boob. Once she had gone a decent time (a few hours) with no vomitting we could try a regular session. You just need to watch for signs of dehydration. The only thing they were concerned about was if she threw up any blood or green bile.
  • After she whined and squirmed for 10 minutes in the swing seat, I tried putting her back into her crib and she was immediately out like a light... and she's still asleep now (5 hours later). I'm so thankful we have both been able to get some sleep!

Ooh, and she just made a squawk... let the nurse-you-back-to-health games begin :)
  • J had his first actual vomit on Sunday, and it was green (infection/mucous). We've been fighting a virus since. He's gone from happy cool days to feverish fussy days off and on since then.
