GBS Positive. Whomp wah... Antibiotic question

My health provider has an online chart where I can confirm and make appts, look up test results, ect.

Just looked and I am GBS positive
:( boo... (meh, it happens)

I was looking at the list of antibiotics that they give to combat GBS... I am allergic to 2 of the 3 main antibiotics and have never been given the 3rd because it's in the same family. And the other one that could possible combat GBS gives me a TERRIBLE yeast infection!

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue or something similar?

TIA!

Edit: just thought of something... do they even give you the antibiotic if you are having a c/s??

Re: GBS Positive. Whomp wah... Antibiotic question

  • I don't believe you need the antibiotic if you're having a csection.

Definitely tell your doctor this. There may be another alternative antibiotic for you. Good luck!

  • My sister was positive for GBS, and even with a vaginal delivery, she was hooked up to an IV with antibiotics.
I'd definitely talk to your doctor

I know that I will need the antibiotic if I deliver vaginally. I don't think you read my post right.
I am ALLERGIC to all of the antibiotics they give to treat GSB. And am wondering if anyone was in a similar situation. And if it's necessary to get the antibiotic if I have a Csection.
  • I found out Tuesday at my appointment that I'm GBS+ too. Doc said it didn't matter because I'm having a csection and won't need the antibiotics.

  • You won't need antibiotics if you have a c/s. The infection lives in your urine and stool. There is only risk for infection if your baby enters the birth canal. At least that's how I understand it. Definitely a question for your Dr at your next appt.

  • I am allergic to two of the three antibiotics also. There is a 3rd alternative I've taken once though. And I believe like someone else said you don't need it with a cs. Antibiotic allergies make life difficult when preggo for sure. I had a respiratory infection this summer and I about had no options with drugs safe for baby!
  • If you are allergic to penicillin, they will give you clindamycin/erythromycin. If you are indeed allergic to those 3, they may decide to pre-medicate you (benadryl) depending on the allergic response. Or they can use Vanco. If one causes a yeast infection, they will probably take that chance because a yeast infection and it's treatment are not nearly as bad at the treatment for GBS in a newborn. I would rather have a yeast infection than put my newb through testing and treatment (lumbar puncture, Iv antibiotics)
You won't need it if you have a c section, unless you go into labor first. I believe many docs will treat you if your water breaks due to exposure. But, ultimately this is all up to you and your doc. The chances of baby getting gbs is low, but not one to mess around with. Def discuss with your doc, but I wouldn't stress.

  • I am GBS positive and having a c section. I've been spazzing out over this way more than necessary, so I've asked a lot of questions. My doctor said that an antibiotic isn't needed for a c section, but if your water breaks and depending on how long the baby is in you after water breaking it might not be a bad idea to get one. Not too sure about antibiotic choices... I haven't looked into that since I'm not allergic to penicillin.

I've been a lurker for the past couple weeks since finding this board. Hope it's alright that I jumped in on this post since it was something I actually knew a little about.

  • You won't get GBS antibiotics if you have a c-section but you will still likely get antibiotics to prevent a surgical site infection (antibiotics active against bacteria on the skin vs strep in the vagina).  We use cephalosporins here for that.

For GBS the choices are usually penicillin/nafcillin (1st), clindamycin (2nd) and vancomycin (3rd).

Depends on your reaction type for your allergy as well. Unless it's facial swelling, anaphylaxis, you may still get the medication. Rash, GI symptoms, etc are not reasons to avoid using those drugs.

  • The way my OB put it, "with a c/s, you'll be on antibiotics anyway."  I'm pretty sure a round of antibiotics is standard after anyone has any surgery, to stave off any infections related to the surgery site, but it wouldn't necessarily relate to the GBS.

Definitely talk to your doctor.  I have a sensitivity to erythromycin, and when I was on an antibiotic last week, I had something I had never even heard of before (Flagyl, I think it was called?).  There are a lot of them out there, so I'm sure your doctor can find one that will work for you.

  • What PPs said.  Doctors and the pharmacy that will process the order will know which antibiotics will be safe for you to take/if you actually need them.  Like another PP said, with surgery an antibiotic is typical for prophylaxis anyway.   I would just make sure you bring up your concerns with they doctor.

  • Or you can opt out of antibiotics and have baby observed for 48 hrs. I did that with my son. He was fine, and we had a vaginal birth. Antibiotics are never mandatory.

One thing that might be worth asking about would be a re-test for GBS. It's my understanding that it comes and goes, so you may be positive now but negative in a couple weeks.

I have also been told that if you take probiotics, you're much less likely to be GBS+. If your doctor is up for testing you again, you could begin a probiotic regimen in hopes of being negative.

  • Thanks Ladies!
Baby is still breech so C/s is scheduled and I'll only have to worry about the antibiotic for the surgery!
