Sometimes when DS is nursing he starts coughing and gasping like some went down the wrong way. How can I prevent this and what do you do when it happens?
I bottle feed but this happens to my LO about once every other day. She just gets ahead of herself! I sit her up quickly and pat her back and hold my breath waiting for her to breath again. Super scary stuff! The first time she did it was terrifying, but I was impressed with how quickly I reacted to shooting her upright.
This happens to my LO frequently. It scares me and makes me feel guilty, especially since she usually cries. Like others, I just sit her up and I say "breathe." I also have an oversupply and overactive letdown, so if I notice that it's really hard for her, I'll lay down with her on my belly and/or express a little milk into a towel.
I had a horrible episode of this last night with my LO. I've been using the Medela Calma nipple for his bottles and think they may be a part of the issue so I'm trying out different bottles/nipples to see if that makes a difference. He choked so hard and it scared the crap out of me. He screamed an awful scream and I'm surprised everyone in the house didn't wake up and run into the room.
My LO choked so bad the other day we called the dr in the middle of the night. It was different than his normal spit up and choking incidents. It took him longer to breathe and he was turning bright dark red. Afterward he kept coughing and wheezing which was why we called. It's amazing though how their instincts kick in..he coughed so hard!

Did the dr have any suggestions for when it happens??

This is why I feel basic infant CPR and the Heimlich maneuver should be taught around delivery time. Basic knowledge can help calm fears.
Hanging head in shame...I should have done this way sooner, but I did look up classes yesterday

We had to watch 3 videos and do an infant cpr demo with the nurses before we were allowed to leave the Nicu. We watched the cpr video, a car seat safety video and a (basically) don't shake your baby video. We felt WAY more prepared going home then we would have if we would have had a normal hospital experience
