anyone angry and sad during pregnancy affect the baby?

i am 17 weeks along and i had a huge fight with my husband. I yelled at him and cried the whole day today, until i got stomach cramps. Do you think this will affect the baby? I am worried with my baby well being now, but i cant help it.. sometimes life gives u lemon.

  • lol i know that! i try to make lemonade everyday now! what i want to know if whether my past action affected the baby in any way?
  • I'm sure your baby is fine. You probably made yourself sick more than anything from being upset but that shouldn't affect the baby.
  • No, I highly doubt it.

  • I am no expert, but I believe that the babies of pregnant women who experience long-term stress (like those living in a war zone) are affected by the mother's emotional state. I am doubtful that one day of tears would have a negative effect, though. If it will put your mind at ease, talk to your OB or midwife.
  • I had cramps after a terrible fight with a coworker at work and a really stressful day. I took a warm bath and relaxed after until they went away. I too was really worried the amount of stress I was feeling would harm the baby but according to my 20 week scan baby seems ok. I think a few days of stress is normal, but if you are having lots of terrible days maybe tell your doctor.
  • I underwent a huge amount of stress with my first pregnancy.  I lost my career, I was descriminated against, and the issues at work were ongoing from the time I was about 20 weeks until well after delivery.  I had days where I literally cried all night.  And I don't mean the modern sense of literally, I mean the actual meaning of it - I would go to sleep at 10pm, wake up at midnight, and cry continuously until 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning.

My daughter is normal and healthy, and has absolutely no problems as a result, although her sense of humour does tend more towards the dry than a regular toddler (she may just come by that naturally).

One day of a fight and crying isn't going to do much.

I think a dry sense of humor is a total benefit :)

OP, I am sure your baby will be fine. I am sure we will all have some kind of sadness or stress at least once during our pregnancy. If something bad were to happen to babies as result of an argument and crying/being under "every day stress", I'm sure all babies would be in big trouble.

  • thank you for sharing your stories ladies!
  • My SIL lost her dad in a car accident. She ended up going into labour cause of the stress at 32 weeks, but that is a pretty extreme case. Just try to relax and avoid fighting if it's causing you to cramp. I'm sure you'll be okay.
  • I lost my brother 3 weeks ago was/am devastated! Cried for days and days...I'm ok now and the babe is fine. It's tough...
  • I think there is a mind/body/spirit connection in general. This is going to sound all crunchy & hippy dippy but hear me out! I don't think that stress, from a fight or anything like that, would cause harm to the baby. However, I don't know, sometimes I wonder if you're carrying a child that you don't really want/are sad about all the time/and have general negative feelings TOWARD YOUR BABY, I wonder if that has lasting effects. That said, stress in general can have negative effects on your body so try to take it easy! However, like PP said, I'm sure you & your baby are happy/healthy.
  • 2 years ago My best friend's husband left her when she was six months pregnant and she came to live with us. She cried every night... Not just weepig but full on uncontrollable sobs! Her son was born very healthy with no issues despite all the stress she went through during the latter part of her pregnancy. Just try to eat well, sleep well and the LO will be just fine! Xoxo hope things are ok with your hubby now. Oh and my best friend is happy again and realises she is better off without that weasel!
