My Baby is SO Awake - Help and Advice Please

My LO has been very wakeful from the start. We are 5 weeks PP tomorrow. We have bad nights often, but not every night. Last night was a great night for us. To sleep by 11:30, up at 4:30, up at 8:30. The previous 2 were terrible. Down around midnight, up 45 min later and then he stayed up for over and hour and a half. I cant even remember the nights from the weekend or last week and the sleep deprivation is starting to take a toll because I am not getting daytime naps either. Today he was up at 8:30 and I just got him down now at 12:45 and we will see if it sticks; each time I have put him down this morning he has woken up again 15 min. later.

He fights his way out of the swaddle, and the only other of the 5 S's that does anything for me is sucking with a pacifier. He sadly seems to hate the swing, and lately he is not even sleeping good on my chest like he was before. Yesterday we went to the chiropractor for the first time, and we go again next Tuesday.

Bedtime routines do not seem to work for us either. Baths stimulate him, so we do those in the late afternoon because after them he is up for a couple hours. He could care less about my singing, or even rocking in the rocking chair. He is a little young for colic, and he is not screaming all the time, but just incredibly fussy. He will only go to sleep when he is dang good and ready, it seems like there is no soothing him to sleep, even nursing doesn't work.

When he is awake, he has his periods of being a happy content baby, but a majority of the time is spent being grumpy and fussing. I got him to be quiet today by trying out our sling and carrying him around, but he wouldn't go to sleep in it. He seems to need to be held/entertained all the time and it is exhausting.

I feel like my brain is starting to fry. Hubby works nights, so I am SOL there. I am dreading going back to work if this doesn't straighten out. Please tell me it will be over eventually! Any ideas would be appreciated. I feel like I have the most awake baby ever and it is getting really hard. TIA.

Re: My Baby is SO Awake - Help and Advice Please

  • There's a big developmental leap around 6 weeks where the baby is becoming more aware of their environment and themselves in relation to it. DS2 has been way more awake the past 5 days, and more fussy too, even though we still have plenty of happy time. His favorite thing to do is look at new things. I put a toy bar up on his swing and that kept him happy while I had some dance time with the toddler. Last night, I got him to stop fussing by making faces and funny sounds. He looked really confused, but at least he stopped fussing. It's just a phase that hopefully won't last more than a week.

  • Also do you baby wear? Sometimes the only thing that will get my LO to calm is being put in the Moby wrap and walked around the house while jiggling him gently. He likes the ergo too but not quite as much. Hang in there!!

  • I just tried baby wearing today. He liked it, but it didn't put him to sleep, although we probably didn't do it long enough. He finally gave up officially at 2:00 after 5.5 hours of awake time, and then he slept for 4 hours. Now he has been up since 6, but not fussy, being a good baby, but very awake. Hopefully he is settling down right now, but as soon as I say that he will be up.

My mom said yesterday how she was impressed with me because of how he is up all the time and needs so much attention vs. me and my sister who slept all the time. I guess being a FTM helped, because I was figuring this is just how it is, and it cant last forever, but the last few days have been HARD.

  • No words of wisdom here, only comiseration. Same! My LO seems to refuse sleep. Just hoping it will get better soon.
  • Try lavendar Johnson's bedtime lotion & a white noise app. Good luck.
