newborn weight gain

I know most new moms are concerned about too little weight gain, but anyone concerned with too much? My DS went from 8lbs 11oz at birth, lost 10% and went down to 7lbs 13oz, and at his one month check up was 13lbs 6oz!

That's a 4lb 11oz gain from birth which doesn't include gaining back the 14oz he had lost! Ped said it's normal (although he's 98th percentile!) now, but would be concerned if weight gain continued. I BF on demand and was hesitant to use a pacifier due to nipple confusion and speech fears. Should I be offering a pacifier to soothe his desire to suck? From what I've read you can't overfeed a BFing baby as they regulate the flow/amount of milk, but maybe Dr. Google is wrong :/ Anyone else have a super cute GIANT baby?

Re: newborn weight gain

  • My baby is gaining really fast too.  I usually give one breast, then once he's done, the other. This week I went to a weighed feeding and he ate 4.5 oz. on the first breast!  How can he possibly be eating that much?! I have no advice or anything, but you're not alone in your concern!

Good luck- ever since my kid discovered breastfeeding, pacifiers are cheap imitations. He will just sit on my nipple and pretend to suck with these wimpy little chin movements. It's funny and again not...

I've even tried @yoginiKiki 's trick with wearing  pacis on the boob. Nope.

  • I'm not a medical professional, but I can't imagine being concerned about a little baby gaining too much weight. They tend to fatten up and then have a growth spurt or two and stretch out a bit, but even if they stay chubby after a growth spurt I wouldn't be concerned. My DD1 was quite the chunker, but shortly after she started walking she slimmed down all by herself. If your little man is still chunky when he starts school, maybe worry then.
  • My baby was born 8 lb 5 oz and was 11 lb at the one month appointment. Based on various advice at different times we were stingy with his food for several days. It's difficult to deal with a hungry baby so if other things don't work, you'll have to feed.

To repeat the advice we were given: Doc said baby can't overeat at this point. Doc suggested holding or offering entertainment and that sometimes he might be bored and not actually be seeking food. So I try to distract him for a few moments and if it works i don't feed him. He eats alot, sometimes 8 oz in a sitting and very little spitting up (his the doc measures over feeding).
  • I'm in the "you can't over feed a breast fed baby" camp. They generally slow down after a while, especially once their more mobile. Plus, all babies are different with their growth and someone needs to be near the top of the weight percentile ;)

  • A lot of bf babies gain fast at first and then steady off. I' try a paci but thats bc I hate being a paci.

  • Thank you ladies for your advice!
  • My little guy was on 8lbs8oz. At 6 weeks he was up to 11lbs! We FF so I worry about how much/how little to feed him, but I've found he's really good at regulating himself.
