What do you do to LO's nails?

I peel them periodically when he nurses. It works well. I haven't been brave enough to clip them yet.

  • We have clipped them twice now and filed them once. He always manages to scratch his face and the last time it was bleeding.

  • I clipped them two days ago and I cut her finger pretty bad. It was bleeding and I had to out a band aid on it. :( I felt so so terrible. So now her nails are super long and I don't know what to do. I think I will get a file and try that.

  • I peel them, bite them, and clip them when he's asleep and dada's holding him.

  • I clip mostly, but will pull off a very loose hang nail. It doesn't bother me to clip. Ds actually loves having his nails clipped, to the point that we have to hide the clippers and fake clipping his do they aren't too short.

  • Her thumbnails were so long when she was born that I had to clip them.  I bite off hangnails and file (front to back) to maintain a shorter length.

  • I was told not to clip because it's too likely to cut his fingers. Doc said to soak and peel. I peel when they start to break off. I was also told to file but you can't file paper, they're too flimsy.
  • I've clipped 3 times but the last time I got the tip of his finger and between his screech and all the blood I'm so nervous to do it again. He mostly wears mittens
  • I peel them when the tips start to get jagged/loose. If he has long nails intact, I'll pick at them while he nurses so they come off sooner than later.

  • I found that using cuticle cutters while she's breast feeding or sleeping works the best! They are smaller and sharper than the stupid safety baby clippers. We tried the clippers unsuccessfully and biting for the first 5 weeks. Then last week I was trimming my own hang nails and thought "let's give these a try for DD" they were perfect.

  • I bite them while he's nursing or asleep. He doesn't seem to mind
  • DH clips them while I nurse.

  • So far I have only peeled. His just don't seem to grow much.
  • Up until last night he was pretty much living in mittens, but SO tried to file them while he was sleeping. It didn't work that great so we ended up just clipping them.

  • clipping while she sleeps

  • I've clipped them once, and peeled since then. I find filing at this age, when they're so soft, is extremely tricky!

  • Our pedi recommended the little scissors and they work great. I was filing and it wasn't doing anything.
