E. Coli in the water?

I just got a note on my door saying that e. Coli has been found in the neighborhood's water supply and that precautions should be taken such as boiling water. I EBF so I'm not worried about LO getting sick from eating. I'm just not sure how careful I need to be. If I shower, could the organisms live on my skin? If I've already been infected, could she catch it from me?

Re: E. Coli in the water?

  • That's very scary! I'm sorry this happened. First I would (as I'm sure you have) do a lot of research. Contact the city and see what they say about taking proper steps. Although they may not know much.

Ask a doctor, call the news to see if anyone else has had concerns. That's a huge deal. I'm glad they warned y'all but still....

I hope you get some answers. I'm sorry I'm not that big of a help but I hope this matter goes away quickly.

  • Thanks. They gave us some ideas ion how to protect ourselves and I've Googled some others. They flushed the system today and will take repeat samples for the rest of the week. I just don't know how paranoid I should be. Does it affect my laundry? Does it live on my skin? I wouldn't care so much if I wasn't worried about my daughter. Am I overthinking? Ugh! So frustrating!

  • We vacation on a lake and we get our drinking water supply from a natural spring. It was contaminated with ecoli this summer, so I feel your frustration! We had to wash all DDs bottles and my pump parts in bottled water. It was crazy how much we went through!
The level of contamination is what would effect my decisions of what was safe vs unsafe (ex drinking not safe, laundering safe). Have you called your town/city water dept and asked what's safe?
As far as showering, can you just wipe yourself down with the pacifier wipes they make? Baby wipes would probably make you taste weird lol.
  • If you're town can't give you answers ask your pediatrician and/or lactation consultant about its effects on breast milk
  • I haven't contacted anyone yet. We got the notice in the evening. They are supposed to test again tomorrow so I hope we get an update. The paci wipes are a great idea actually and I do have those. I read that it cannot be transferred through breast milk so that's a relief. I just hope I don't get sick now!

  • Its takes 8-12 hours for symptoms to start.
  • Also I wouldn't bathe your LO in the water.
