Too much sleep??

First, I know & don't hate me!! My DD has always been a great sleeper (knock on wood). She is 10 days shy of turning 6 months. She sleeps about 12-13hours through the night. Usually goes to bed at 8pm, will stir a little in the morning around 6-7am then fall back asleep for awhile (It;s 9am now and she is still sleeping). Then she usually takes a catnap for maybe 30min mid morning, a long afternoon nap in the crib (2-3hours), then another 20-30min catnap in the evening.

She is full of energy when she is awake and is happy... But, I was reading the typical amount of sleep at her age should be about 14hours and she is beyond that....?

  • I'm boiling over with jealousy. As mentioned, I would just enjoy it and ask the doctor if you're really concerned.

I think it was mentioned in another thread  that anywhere up to 16 hrs in a 24 hour period was normal.  I wouldn't worry about it.  DS sleeps somewhere between 14-16 hours any given day.

  • DS1 slept crazy amounts when he was this age. He'd sleep 12-14 hours at night and take 2 naps that were 2-3 hours. I'd ask my dr at every appt if it was ok and he'd tell me yes it's fine, he would only worry if he was still sleeping like that at 2. DS1 is 2 now and sleeps 12-14 at night and only one nap now for 2-3 hours. He just loves sleep! Enjoy it! Unfortunately DS2 doesn't have the same love.
  • I am sorry for those that still aren't getting sleep!! I did go through tgat too so my heart really goes out to you. DD has been a great sleeper since 7wks.... I am a FTM & I am sure #2 will give me hell! :-)

  • It's totally fine. The AVERAGE baby sleeps 14 hrs. Yours is an above average sleeper. Mine sleep a lot, too (not as much as yours). My neighbor's daughter sleep a total of 8 hrs a day... Including night... Her doctor said it was fine.

  • She must get it from DH..... I still can't sleep for anything since being pregnant if that makes up for my long baby sleeper. I am up all the time tossing & turning anyway!!
