Bottle Suggestions?

With my 1st daughter, I breast fed until she was 6 months old. I was diagnosed with Graves' disease then and my body quit producing milk. I used Dr. Brown bottles with her and loved them. With my 2nd daughter, I only breast fed. Used the Dr. Brown bottles two times when I had someone else watch her, and she did fine with them. But with this baby, I will be going back to work. I plan on pumping and having my husband feed him with bottles while I'm working. My question is, have any of you done the same? And was there a specific brand of bottle you had success with? I don't want to cause nipple confusion as I'd like to breast feed when I am home. I have Dr. Brown bottles and some Breastflow bottles. The Breastflow bottles have a bigger rounder nipple than traditional bottles, anyone tried those?

Re: Bottle Suggestions?

  • Every baby is different. I thought I would be all prepared and buy a crap ton of avent bottles before DD was born and even the slowest nipple was too fast for her. I guess she was used to a boob trickle, haha. We switched to ventaire, and then eventually went back to avent closer to 9 months. I'll probably get 2 or 3 different bottles to try for this one and buy more when we figure out what works.

  • I am a FTM starting out with Tommy Tippee's based recommendations but I didn't register nor plan to buy too many just in case. From my research, it is on a baby-by-baby basis on what works!

  • That's a good idea. I'll probably end up trying both and see which he likes better. The Breastflow ones look so weird to me, but I was thinking maybe they'd be the closest type of nipple to a real boob. Just never used them before.
  • I'll also see if the lactation specialist has any suggestions for switching in between breast and bottle when we have him in the hospital.
  • Yeah, I was wondering about bottles. I plan on bf but you never know what's gonna happen. Do I buy a few of several different kinds to see which ones baby girl will take to? It's seriously the last thing on my registry to get because I have no idea what I should do.

I was scared to death of the nipple confusion thing because I read so much about it. It was never an issue for us though.

ETA: I also thought I was doomed to fail at BFing.

  • I registered for the Kiinde set to try that bottle system out-you pump right into bags that are freezer safe and are dishwasher safe. I also liked the bottle warmer that they have. I did pick up some Avent bottles at target this weekend (on clearance for $6.50 for 3!!!!) so am open to whatever works. I also liked life factory bottles-I have one of their water bottles and love it!!

  • We used breastflow with our now 3 year old and I absolutely loved them. There was no nipple confusion whatsoever since they really mimick breastfeeding. I would definitely recommend them!

  • DS was good with Dr browns. From what I understand every kid had their own bottle preferences though.

  • I was researching bottles the other day and I found where playtex have I think 4 different types of nipples and one that was specifically supposed to mimic a breast nipple. My sister and SIL both use playtex so that's probably what I'll use. I also saw at baby's r us that they had a sampler pack with each kind of nipple for you to try from playtex as well :)
  • Don't stock up on a ton of one kind of bottle.

Buy 2ish of a few different brands to try out. See what your baby likes and then buy more.

FWIW I BF at home and used Avent bottles while away from DS.

  • Thanks for all the input ladies! :)
  • I like Tommee Tipee (or however you spell it), avent, and Medela.
  • I had to buy a few different kinds, she eventually settled on the medela calma, then decided at 3 months that she wouldn't take any kind of bottle no matter what. Very frustrating!

  • Based on advice from my IRL mom friends, I registered for two sampler packs (Medela and Munchkin LATCH). We plan on buying one or two bottles of some other different brands also with different nipples, that way we can try to find whichever style this baby likes.

  • I like Dr. Browns in general. I used them for all 3 god babies :) if they didn't like those Avent are my second favorite. The nipples don't collapse so easily and I've never had an issue with the 1 (slowest) being too fast for a newborn.

  • Lansinoh momma bottles saved us with my first! He was a bottle hater and we literally tried everything. I especially liked that there were 3 parts total compared to dr browns 5!

  • This is helpful! I've been eyeing the Munchkin Latch, and I honestly had no idea the baby could be so picky over it. Maybe I'll just buy one of a few different kinds.
  • I swear by the old school drop-in Playtex bottles and Tommee Tippee's! I used both with DS and never had any issues with confusion (also used a pacifier without any issues). He stopped latching at 7 weeks but that was an entirely different issue. TT also has pieces that attach to the bottles and enables them to be used with most pumps, as well as caps for them to make freezing easier. I plan on TT bottles this time around but I'm hoping not to have to use them too often just cos I want to be able to nurse longer and more exclusively. Don't be afraid to accept hand me down bottles from friends (I just sterilized the casings and replaced the nipples on the drop-in bottles since they were handed down to us) and be flexible with trying out a few different ones cos you never know what baby will prefer :) Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • I mostly breastfed my DS, but when I did pump and he had a bottle he ended up liking the Avent Natural bottles best. I had a sample pack of the regular Avent bottles, but he didn't like how he had to break suction while drinking. The Avent Natural ones have a vent in the side of the nipple so he can just latch on like BF and suck away.
One friend uses Dr Brown and really likes how they have a vent so the baby swallows less air, which helps with her boy who has reflux.

  • I used Breastflow and Medela. Be aware the Breastflow bottles have two sizes of nipple so you need to move up when baby's bigger or they get frustrated!
