What kind of winter jacket w/ car seat?

It's been getting a little chilly here in Boston as the season's starting to change and it got me thinking about a winter jacket for LO. Last winter he was obviously still in the infant seat with a car seat cover that worked perfectly. I was wondering what others are planning on doing about a jacket this winter since our LO's will be most likely out of the infant seats (at least my LO will be). I know you're not supposed to bulk them up and put them in the car seat but I don't want him to be without a jacket when we go from the house to the car or the car to another destination. Do you put a jacket on LO then take it off in the car? Use blankets? Is there a winter jacket that's warm enough and appropriate for the car seat? I'm trying to figure out the fastest and most efficient way to get LO to the car warm and be able to strap him in safe. Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.

We warm up the car if it gets really cold. Can't wait for it to get chilly here. She has so many cute fall/winter clothes.

This. And you can layer blankets on top of the seat (after they are buckled in, of course) if more warmth is needed.

  • I bought a thin fleece and a thin quilted coat from Old Navy that will be thin enough to not have to adjust the straps to fit her in.  Then I bought a thick puffer coat for really cold days that I will use to transport to and from the car.

  • Probably just a bunnyhug type deal in the car. And then I bought him a snow suit for actually playing outside. I'll just warm up the vehicle and use blankets with his car seat.
  • Thank you! Was going to post this myself!
  • We have mostly mild winters so we do fleece jackets.  On the really cold days though, we take the big puffy jackets off in the car.
  • Second western NY winter with both babies and what works for me is to strap them in and then bundle them in blankets. I put them both in the car in their outfits, and since the weather is cold they're in season-appropriate clothes anyway. The car is always on and warm for them, so they're only "exposed" for the minute it takes to buckle them in and shut the door. I did/will be putting the coats back on once we reach our destination!

  • I second a fleecy style zip up jacket with blanket in the car.  Those fleece jackets are thin enough but keep you quite cozy.

  • Team fleece hoodie. DS's first winter I think we rarely put a heavy winter coat on him. A long sleeve onesie, fleece hoodie, hat and blankets were enough to get in and out of stores to and from the car

  • I'm thinking fleece jacket with blanket, mittens, hat as needed. And his clothing will depend on the weather too. Extra cold days will get thicker long sleeve shirts vs  short sleeve onesie or thinner long sleeve one.

  • I've heard the Patagonia are thin enough for car seats while being well insulated. I think it's the down sweater model. https://www.patagonia.com/us/product/baby-down-sweater-jacket?p=60518-0

  • Heavier coat for going to and from the car.

Meh, sometimes not even this if I am relatively close to the entrance of a store. I mean unless it was in the negatives. 20-30 degrees I don't bother and just keep the fleece, hats and mittens on. MOTY

While I haven't seen that in person, I would worry, because down gets its warmth from insulating air pockets that are trapped in the feathers. Anything squishable with pockets like that isn't OK.
Oh ok, I guess I don't remember which Patagonia was good for car seats then. I am certain though that one of them was OK for carseats. I'm not a lot of help!

  • DS was a Dec baby and it was miserable. First winter when he was a year old I would take his heavy jacket off in the car and then put it back on to get out of the car. The second winter we used a thinner fleece jacket and always warmed up the car first (I had an automatic car started).

I will probably use the thinner fleece jackets and hats/gloves. I couldn't imagine trying to undress and redress two of them.
