TTM about Lalabye

I've been eyeing the Ahoy from Nikki's for months and finally pulled the trigger. It showed up last night and first impressions are good. I love how trim it is and the option as a pocket or snap in. DH was impressed as well and we discussed that we might replace some others with more of these.

Just wondering if anyone had used them and what the longer term opinions are. Do they hold up well? Any complaints?

  • I have one and it has held up well. However, I think it is one of the China cheapie custom diapers. The company is in the US, but they are made in China. It is different from the Alva colorsnaps in many ways, but it shares some of the features like the different color snaps, bamboo insert, and front and back pocket opening. The BGs seem so much higher quality for the price as well. I do like their colors, though.

  • Those look like rebranded Happy Flute or Famicheer Diapers.  I LOVE my Happy Flute and Famicheer diapers though.  I have many of those prints in AIO (with a pocket).  If you don't want to deal with Co-Ops, you can buy them from EZPZ Fluff.  She uses Famicheer to make them, but has also done all the testing and stuff to make sure they comply with US standards.

They are really good quality (even the ones I have from co-ops).  My whole AIO stash is Happy Flute, Famicheer/EZPZ Fluff, and Alva AIOs.

  • I would not pay $20 per diaper when you can get them for $5-$6 each through a co-op or $9-$15 through a BST page or EZPZ Fluff and they are brand new.

  • I'd seen some posts about people liking them but was on the fence about it since the Lalabye website makes the typical vague statements about making/designing the diaper without staying where they are made that most of the rebranded china cheapie diaper sites make.  But when Nicki's starting carrying them in July I assumed that meant they followed all the rules and were good quality (even though they are made in China) so I got one in Butterfly Kisses.  I prefer to buy American (or Canadian) made but I have China made Grovia, Kawaii, Imagine, Rumparooz, Fuzzibunz and Diaper Safari in my stash too and many of the "American made" brands still have their inserts made in china (Bumgenuis & Softbums), so why not Lalabye too?

So far it's holding up well, the only other AI2/pocket option diaper I have is Softbums Omni which is way more expensive (especially if you buy their bamboo insert to go with it...) , so I don't mind the $20 price tag for a print I really like.  I was thinking about getting an Ahoy if they were in stock when some of the newer prints from other brands come out (so I can get the freebies too!), but although they stayed in stock for quite some time at Nicki's when I went to look after the 'retiring prints' announcement they were gone... oh well maybe I'll love one of the new prints even more.   Or I'll just buy another Thirsties pocket (with hemp insert included and MF that's actually made in the US) with the $20 instead.

  • I'm glad I read this. I've been on the fence about buying one because of all the popularity with them lately. From the pictures, they do look like a China cheapie to me, but I didn't realize they actually are! I thought with all the rave with them they'd be more comparable to Moraki. I'd rather buy a cheapie instead of spending over $20 on one of these.

  • For those that would call this a "China cheapie" , why would you apply that term? Sincere question here. I've always read that to mean re-branded Alva or the like. I have some of those (Simply Baby I think they're called) and the quality doesn't seem to be comparable.

So what makes a diaper a "China cheapie"?

  • And I agree the price tag is off-putting. I've been fortunate to get all my dipes for $10 or less, including my BG. The only ones I've spent more for are BB covers I got from the gently used section, but I can justify that since the bottom line is less when you factor multiple uses.

  • @blue_elle‌ I'm just going by where they're made...in China. I can get Kawaiis, Alvas, Happy Flutes etc which are made in China that are decent quality at a great price unlike this Lalabye brand. You can spend less and get a BG 4.0 pocket that seems like it's better quality (from what I'm hearing anyway).

  • The quality is no better than a $7 Alva. However, my Lalabye did not delaminate like the colorsnap did. There was a blog post somewhere about menu diapers from China that I can't find now.

However, I found this interview with Lalabye about their diaper design process: https://www.clothdiapergeek.com/2014/03/lalabye-baby-diapers-china-cloth-diapers.html . Whether they are menu diapers or not, I don't think the quality supports the price.

@KLXVI‌ if you've used both and not found quality to be better, that's good to know. I don't have any Alva bamboo, so can't compare those. Glad I only paid $9. It was worth that for the print anyway ;)
