Pumping for Preemie

My LO arrived 5 weeks early and so far we haven't been able to get a latch. I have been pumping every 3 hours since the night he was born. These last few days my supply seems to have really come in and my breasts are sore as all get out. I have been using lanolin pretty faithfully. Is this normal? Do I need to keep wrestling with the soreness until it goes away? Or could I be doing something wrong?

  • Breast pain or nipple pain? Are you doing compression when pumping? How long do you pump for?

  • Nipple  pain. I don't know what compression is so I'm going to assume I'm not doing it. I pump for 20 minutes.
  • I also pumped for a 35 weaker exclusively for 10 months. I am sure you would like to get your LO to breast, and I wish you luck, I have no advice on that. For nipple pain, check you horn size, it is likely the wrong size. Also, what pump are you using? Are you using full suction? Full suction is not always best. I used coconut oil on my nipple and breast for lubrication while pumping. Compression is easy massage on your breasts while pumping to assist in milk release. There are tutorials on YouTube. Also, get or make a hands free bra if you are not already using one. Make one by cutting holes in a sports bra. Or they can be purchased through amazon, most will recommend the Simple Wishes brand;however, I used to Medela brand with no complaints. I think that's all.

  • I am using a medela pump with a 27mm horn. I do have a hands-free pump bra (god sent!) I use a fourth of the suction my pump offers but it still kinda hurts. I don't do compression. I do like the idea of using coconut oil to lube the horns during pumping. I never thought to do that.
  • I don't remember how much suction I used, but I would always start with it just barely pulling then increase as I could. Using compression even with lower suction should help with output. Also, you don't have to keep washing those part put in a ziplock and refrigerate for the day, then wash once a day.
