Flying/Car Rental with LO

We are flying with LO next week and are trying to decide whether to bring her car seat and gate check it or to just rent a car seat from the car rental place.  Does anyone have any advice on which is better to do?  If you rent a car seat from the car rental company, do they install the seat for you or do you do it yourself?  It will be late when we pick up the car and the idea of having to figure out how to install an unfamiliar car seat in to an unfamiliar car in the dark is not exactly appealing.  TIA!

Re: Flying/Car Rental with LO

  • Bring your own car seat.  You don't know where a rental car seat came from, nor how it's maintained.  Ours sit in a bay, on a shelf where people smoke, sit in them, etc.  And they are seats that have been "found" in other cars so we have no idea how old they are, etc.

We would never install a car seat for liability purposes, nor should you want someone else installing it.  They're not trained on installing car seats (or anything else in the car for that matter) so I would definitely not want someone else even touching it.

I know it's a pain but bottom line, bring your own. ;)

  • @thepriceisright - The "ick" factor is definitely something I'm thinking about with renting a car seat.  I have no idea how well they have cleaned it after the last child used it.

  • Ditto above. If your seat snaps into a stroller, even better for moving around the airport before gate check. Also, this bag was awesome. We fit so much extra crap in it along with the base and car seat and it was still free to check at the gate. Got in on Craigslist for $10.

  • @JRT512 - If we bring her car seat, I'm totally wrapping it in bibles!  Then it will definitely be safe, right? :))

  • @SailorTink - I wanted to get LO a seat but DH thought it wasn't worth it.  I told him that if she is really squirmy (which she usually is), he is responsible for holding her and walking the aisle with her.  She should be fine on the way up because it's her bedtime but the way back it is mid-morning when she is normally wide awake.

  • If we bring LO's car seat, it will be her infant seat that she is close to outgrowing.  The trip would probably be the last time we use it anyway so if it is damaged, it won't be as bad as if it were her new convertible seat.
I think I'm sold on bringing her car seat rather than renting one.  There's too many unknowns with the rented seats.  Thanks ladies!

  • @thepriceisright - the flight is only 2 hours.  On the way up, the flight is at 7:50pm so we're going to change her in to her pjs before getting on the plane and then start feeding her on take-off.  She should fall asleep pretty easily since she's usually asleep for the night between 7:30-8pm.  On the way back, the flight is at 10am.  She usually takes a small nap at 9am so if we can get her to hold off until 10, that would be ideal.

  • We always bring our car seats. We gate check infant seat and check DS's convertible with bags. It's such a fucking hassle. I hate it.
