Newbie w/ Celiac's

Hi everyone. My husband and I have been married for just over a year and are finally (almost) ready to start TTC.  This is my second marriage and I got to this point once before, but then my ex lost his job and things went down from there, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.  In the past and especially this summer I had a lot of health issues, and it turns out they all stemmed from undiagnosed Celiac's Disease. Between an iron infusion and taking vitamins, along with a GF diet I am in pretty good shape.  I still worry about having issues because of what I have read about Celiac's and pregnancy (and have to keep telling myself that most of these issues are with women who weren't diagnosed during pregnancy). I leave in less than 2 weeks for West Africa (an ebola free country), and once I get back in mid-October and am done with the Malaria medication it will be baby making time.  I am really excited.  Part of me wishes we could TTC in Africa, I think it would mean a lot to my husband, but I am not willing to risk it while on the Malaria medications.

    TMos84,

My wife and I have two beautiful children. After our LO we found that my wife was having some issues with her body. Both of ours at birth had low oxygen rates we had a brush with the NICU the second time around. After all that we find out that my wife has an auto-immune disease. At first we thought it to be Fibromiagla and then we saw a specialist who fit the peices together more perfectly for us and labeled it Celiacs. Both of our children are healthy and growing like weeds. Keep up the excitement and keep us posted!

Celiac is not plural and does not have an apostrophe. It's Celiac not "Celiac's".

That said, best wishes to you. My sister dealt with "random bowel issues" for years and was dx'ed with Celiac shortly after her pregnancy with my nephew. From what I understand the most important things re: CD and TTC is the extra folic acid and iron and other assorted vitamins/minerals that you need in higher doses than normal. She has been able to breastfeed for approaching two years now and is otherwise healthy. She does not want more children but her doctors are confident that CD would pose very little risk to a second pregnancy.

Oh, and have fun in Africa. :)

Good luck to you conceiving! Celiac can be a challenge, but it sounds like you have good head on your shoulders and will take care of yourself. I am so jealous of you going to Africa bc my fiancé is there (Cameroon). Have loads of fun!

Thank you all for your messages.   The vitamins have been the biggest challenge so far.  It is hard to find ones I can take that are GF and halal (don't contain pork i.e. gelatin). I had an iron infusion this summer, and so far so good on that front.
