Praying my mom retires (daycare post)

Currently, I have a job posted on care and sittercity. I have had ZERO luck finding a sitter. Most people have no call no showed for interviews, or want to charge nanny rates.

I'm not looking for a nanny (no house cleaning, errands, cooking, laundry) I'm looking for a person to watch and entertain my kids, keep them fed and alive thru the day.
That said, my mom is 66, already lives with us.

So I offered to pay her (she still has bills to cover) to watch the girls. I'm giving her what we would pay a sitter, so it's fair, and I trust her to be with them. No background check needed!

She was planning on going to PT work hours come January, so In gently prodding her to make the switch to FT retirement

Fingers crossed. Otherwise, I'm screwed with not finding a normal person.

Re: Praying my mom retires (daycare post)

  • I hear ya. I offered to pay my dad...he's not retired yet but thinking about it. I'm honestly pondering having nanny quarters or some sort of above garage apartment etc in our next house (that sounds super pretentious but we are not pretentious people at all, just frugal actually)! It would be so much cheaper to offer free room and board to someone vs the $1600 a month it will cost to have 2 in daycare. I just have one child now but $800+ is so expensive as it is! Ok sorry to hijack your thread. I just had to commiserate with you.

  • Good luck. My mom is not working now and is planning on watching LO at least 2 days a week, but her health is not good/possibly in decline, so I am praying she gets better and will be able to watch him because the lady I am using for daycare is not available all the days I need her.

  • The amount of money some of you ladies pay for daycare scares the S out of me. $2800 is what H and I make in a month! =(

  • With 2 in the daycare dd#2 was at they wanted $2000 for both. Then I pay for #1's aftercare ($260/mo) so I'm at $2260/mo. I CD, and daycare wouldn't accommodate, so then I'm also paying for diapers. Yes it's crazy. Kids are expensive. :(

  • When we have a second I will have to seriously consider becoming a SAHM, daycare costs are out of control!

  • It stinks that our decision to have more kids is almost wholly centered around our ability to pay for daycare. And my husband and I both have decent (not great) paying jobs. We don't have the time (I'm 34) to wait til DS is in school. So crazy.

@mislogis‌ I hope your mom decides to be a full time retired grandmother! My parents are both retired but aren't interested in bsbysitting, which I understand. Though my wallet definitely wishes they would! :-(
  • OP, no snark intended, but I had assumed a nanny just took care of the kids, not that she would also serve as housekeeper. We'll start looking for a nanny soon and wonder what expectations are in different places (although I realize it only matters what expectations are in my area for my purposes!).

No snark taken ;)@Peripatetic14‌ here, all the nannys expect to have to do these "chores" and in doing so, charge more. A sitter IMO, just entertains the kids, no household duties. I'm not paying for the extra chores, nor do I want someone doing them.

  • Hope it works out for you! My mom has watched DS1 2 days a week and with watch both kids 1 day a week after my maternity leave. I don't pay her though :) Grandparents sitters are the best! I'm 95% sure my sister in law will be watching the kids the other 4 days a week. (I will pay her!) If that doesn't work out, I don't know what we'll do, and I hate that feeling not knowing for sure who will be watching them.
