A question for nonFTMs:

I've always heard that your first pregnancy "sets the tone" for your subsequent pregnancies and will be the latest you go for delivery. I know that a lot of people in real life that have been on both sides of this, but I'm curious about the averages here and whom it has held true for.

My water broke at 38w4d and delivered via csection on 38w5d with my first pregnancy.

Re: A question for nonFTMs:

  • I have never heard that. DS was a scheduled cs when his breech little butt wouldn't flip over. That was at 39 weeks exactly so I don't know when I will go into labor for vbac.
  • Loading the player...
  • induced at 39w3d and then csection set for 39 weeks(came at 37w1d). Hoping this one stays put!

  • I'm hoping this one is quicker and sooner than DS1. He was born on exactly 42weeks and after 36hrs of non-progressing labor. Thankfully I gave in, got the epi after 33hrs and DS was born 3hrs and 2 pushes later.

  • My first came at 41 weeks, my epidural wore off... I was in labor for 36 hours, and had to push for 3 hours. It was a nightmare.

I pray that doesn't happen again.

First babe born 37 weeks, induced, was in labour for 13 hours, pushed 3 times and he was out.
Second babe born 2 days late, laboured for 2.5 hours, pushed twice.
Everyone is different and every pregnancy is as well.
  • Both kids born at 37wks 5days.

1st labor was about 12 hours, pushed 30 minutes.

2nd labor was about 6 hours, pushed 3x.

  • DS1 I was a week overdue and had to be induced.  Over an entire day of labor.

DS2 my water broke on my due date, and he was born about 8 hours later.

  • First time around, DD came at 37w2d. Had 10 hours of labor, and about 15 minutes of pushing. I'm hoping that for this little guy/gal, we hit the 37 week mark! That's definitely one of my top concerns, but I know that there are no hard and fast rules. I guess we'll see!

First delivery was at 40w exactly, 9hr contractions to baby. Second was born at 37w6d, 13 hours from the point my water broke, 5 hours after contractions started. Because I had placental problems with both (including history of PPH) I will probably opt for a C/S this time as my bleeding risk is very high.

so true for me but only by a day, I wouldn't put much stock in thinking that. And They say that your second goes faster, not true for me. so now I try not to tell others that because EVERYONE told me that, and the extra 2 hours was not what I was expecting

@seaparrot has your dr/mw said anything about taking Alfalfa throughout your pregnancy to help with bleeding. I had a significant amount of bleeding with #1 and my m/w had me take it (and now everyone in her practice) and I had almost no bleeding , the same with everyone else she has, except for 1 that had a retained placenta

  • My DD was born at 40w 1d, 16 hours after my water broke. My DS was born at 39w 2d, after 12 hours of labor (my OB broke my water with him).
I really just think that every pregnancy is different, regardless of whether it's or first, second, or tenth :)

DD came at 39 weeks about 4 hrs of contractions but hard labor was a few minutes.

  • I haven't heard that, either.

In terms of symptoms, things are already completely different with #2 than with DS. I can't really give you an insight about birth for us, though, since, well....it hasn't happened yet.

With DS, I had cholestasis and pre-e. I was induced at 38w6d, and after 12 hours of (mostly) unmedicated labor, I ended up with a CS because he didn't drop, and I didn't dilate at all.

This time, I'm really hoping for a vaginal birth, but if a c-section is in the cards, so be it. I also really hope that I don't get cholestasis again. That shit was awful.

  • Mine have all come a little early, and a little earlier each time.

    1st - 37wk5d, 27 hours of labor
2nd - no wait, I'm wrong about them all being shorter, she stayed in until 38wk but my labor with her was under two hours total from start to finish.  I delivered her within 7 minutes of arriving at the hospital.
3rd - 37wk4d and I was induced.  I arrived at the hospital over 5cm dilated so even without the induction I don't think I would have stayed pregnant too much longer.  My labor was around 3 hours.
    4th - 37wk1d and 45 minutes of labor.

I'm a little concerned on how early and how quickly this baby will come.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • I ended up being induced at 38 weeks for medical reasons. Poor DS was not ready, and I labored for 27+ hours. Thankfully it ended with a vaginal delivery. I am really hoping to go into labor on my own this time..and a shorter labor would be nice too.

  • My first was born on her due date, 6 hrs start to finish.
my second was 10 days early, 2 hours start to finish (holy shit)
my third was 9 days early, 4 hours start to finish.

My labor situation with #1 was similar, however, my water broke and after 17 hours of no progress {I had been sitting at a 3 for 3 weeks anyway}, a csection happened.

  • Nope, not the case for me.

#1: Contractions started on 37w3d, DS was born on 37w5d. Yes, almost 2 days of contractions! He was a stubborn little one, I had to be induced with pitocin because my labor was not progressing.

#2: I had a Dr appt on 39w4d where she stripped my membranes and contractions started later that afternoon. About 13 hours later, DD was born.
