Three field trips in one month- First grade

And these are 9-1 pm type field trips.  I'm all for kids exploring, but as a WM, it's a bit more challenging for me to take off for all of those long field trips---especially when you add in doctor's appointments.  Anyone else?

Re: Three field trips in one month- First grade

  • Well, only so many parents are allowed to chaperone at our school, so if DS had 3 in one month, the teacher actually tries to give as many parents a chance to chaperone as possible - but it's probably only 3 parents a trip.  Out of 23 kids... I'd actually probably be fighting just to go on ONE trip!

  • Why do you need to take off for field trips?  Our school limits chaperones.  If more parents vounteer than are needed names are drawn.

His school never stated that there was a chaperone limit.  You're right, I don't need to go to all three.  DS has been having some difficulty in the classroom (behavior wise) and his teacher said she would feel more comfortable if I attended the field trips.

I'll pick the most fun one, which happens to be the one that they need the most parent volunteers for.

  • That's a lot of field trips in one month!  I think my first grader will take 3 field trips all year. I'd let the teacher know which one you plan to attend and that you won't be attending the others. If she's concerned about his behavior she will have to be sure that there are enough other parents or assistants on the trip.

I would go to the first one.  Before school set us your expectation for his behavior and enforce it on the field trip.  Then hand him off to the teacher for the second field trip.  Again convey your expectations for his behavior and let him know the teacher will be reporting back to you.  And that you hope he remembers how he was supposed to behave from the first field trip.  Maybe tie it into a reward at home for his good behavior.  Does he have an IEP the teacher is supposed to follow, or is it just in general that the teacher feels he is misbehaving?  HTH.
Thanks everyone!  The thing is, he's never had a history of behavior problems on field trips, just in school.  ClaryPax, he does not have an IEP yet. It may be one in the making though.

  • I must suck because I have never gone on a field trip.
  • I try to go to 1 field trip a year unless it coincides with a day I have off (I am only allowed to work 39.5 hrs a week, and about once a month I have to work a weekend day so I take off a day during the week to Flex). I do try to get into his school as many of those random days I get (so about 5-7 times a yr.) but that depends on appointments that must be made etc.

Just explain you are a working mom and have to work- period. She can't force you to go. Just pick one and attend- I do like the previous idea of a reward tie in.
