3rd Trimester

Back pain at 39 weeks

Is anyone else experiencing lower back pain at 39 weeks. Im not sure what contractions feel like so im worried i might be in early labor and not know it!

Re: Back pain at 39 weeks

  • Yes! I will be 38 weeks tomorrow and I have severe back pain as well. Totally normal. Trust me you would know it if it was labor pains. Our backs hurt from all the extra weight we are carrying and sometimes the position of the baby can make it worse. Sorry, but it is part of the 3rd tri. If you feel though that there is something more serious you should call your doctor. Hand in there almost done!

  • It could be early labor or it could be normal pregnancy lower back pain. Like PP said, you're lucky if it's just now starting! If it's early labor it'll slowly get more uncomfortable and you'll recognize contractions eventually. There's nothing you need to worry about if it's early labor. That can go on for days before progressing. Just relax and kick your feet up :)
  • Why are you worried that you might be in early labor and not know it? Believe me, once you hit real labor you will know it. Not like you can miss it... that baby will come. Back pain is extremely normal... look more for contractions; those are more the tell-tale sign.

  • I'm jealous you made it to 39 weeks without severe back pain.

  • Totally normal!  I'm having it too!  As pp said, if it's labor, you'll know ;)  Good luck!
  • Yep, I'm 36 weeks and it's almost debilitating at this point. It's starting to radiate through my hips too, which is usually caused by baby settling into position.

If it's back labor, then it will increase in intensity and be accompanied by contractions that you'll be able to recognize and time.

For now, Tylenol is your friend!
