High-Risk Pregnancy

Preeclampsia 15 weeks?

Has anyone had preeclampsia earlier in pregnancy? I went to the dr last week and my blood pressure was 122/72...which isn't too high but it is high for me. The midwife I saw that day acted mildly concerned. I have also had some mild headaches off and on for the past week or so. They tend to go away with tylenol and I also have sinus congestion and pressure, but I know headaches are a sign of Pre-e. I have not had swelling but I did gain 10 lbs in the first trimester. This is my first pregnancy and I am a basket case worrying about this. Could this have been a one-off bad BP reading? Please help! I already suffer from anxiety and I am so scared that I'll lose my baby. :(

  • PreE is after 20 weeks.

  • You should ask to doa 24 hour urine collection.  A Pre-E diagnosis would come based on your BP and the amount of protein you are putting out in a 24 hour urine collection.

You CAN have BP issues without Pre-E.  I was on BP meds for my first 2 pregnancies - diagnosed with pregnancy hypertension - and I did multiple 24 hour urine collections and my levels never got to a Pre-E level.

High Blood Pressure can be separate from Pre-E.

Your next steps would be to monitor your BP closely and do a 24 hour urine collection.  BP meds or bedrest would be next given the progression of your Bp issues and other symptoms...if you end up needing to treat high BP you will probably be referred to a MFM clinic for more ultrasounds and monitoring of baby's health and growth in the 3rd tri.

I had high BP starting at 8-11 weeks both times, took my BP meds, watched my sodium intake, and vaginally delivered 2 healthy babies at 39 weeks.

    Good Luck.

  • PreE is after 20 weeks.

While a technical diagnosis of Pre-E may not be made until 20+ weeks - symptoms and the progression of Pre-E before 20w is totally possible and should be monitored and treated accordingly.

  • I was diagnosed with preeclampsia at 24 weeks. I apparently got it sometime between my 20-24 week appointment and had no symptoms. I went in at 24 weeks for a regular appointment and they sent me straight to labor and delivery where the progression was so bad I had to have an emergency c-section that night. My daughter was the size of a 21 weeker (13oz) so they think I developed it then and she quit growing and sucked up all the amniotic fluid to hold on to what little bit she had left. She was a miracle baby and is now 6 years old. I'm not a smoker or anything and was 21 when this happened. It was very random and scary especially bc I thought everything was fine walking into that appointment.
  • Thank you for all of the encouragement! I am going to buy a BP monitor and see how high it gets at home. I do get anxious at the dr and it was mentioned that could have been the reason for the higher reading. I just looked at my printout from the last visit and protein was negative in urine. 122/72 just really alarmed me since my BP is normally low when I'm not pregnant.
  • I also usually have low BP pre-pregnancy and it has jumped up to a more "normal" range (ie high for me) since I've been pregnant.  Doctors aren't concerned but they have been monitoring it just in case it does continue to go up.  I would say try not to stress about it too much as that will likely just raise your BP artifically (I know that is like telling the sun not to shine).  Keep your doctor informed if you do continue to worry about though.

    Sending good vibes your way!

  • Thanks! It's nice to hear from someone in a similar situation. You always hear that high blood pressure is 140/90 or above, but is it also considered hypertension if your BP is normally low and not the usual 120/80? Or it has to be 140/90? I guess that's what confuses me.
  • I've been told the 140/90 threshold is still there but because I am generally lower than normal if I start experiencing sympton of hypertension at a lower BP they would take it seriously.  If it's just a matter that my BP is running higher than usual for me without any other symptons they are pretty  much leaving it for the time being.

I've been told if I start getting lots of headaches, excess swelling or my vision starts to change to start monitoring my BP and to call my OB.  So far so good.

  • While you might be used to lower BP readings, I'm not sure why your midwife would be concerned about 122/72? That's perfectly normal... :/ I wish mine was that good lol With my last pregnancy, on meds, it was constantly running 170's/110's. Just keep an eye on it as you get farther along.

  • I went and saw my nurse the other day since I was getting headaches and some stomach pain. My BP was actually lower though at 113/68. She wasn't at all concerned with the 122/72 like the midwife was.So, I guess I am just getting regular pregnancy aches and pains. This is my first baby so I am super paranoid at every twinge of pain I get! Lol.

This...although my diagnosis was made at about 19.5 weeks. I was hospitalized and doctors couldn't believe it to be pre-e but guess what ? it was ...and severe and HELLP. My son had to be delivered at 20 weeks 1day. It happens.

However, you say those aren't your norm readings? What are they usually because pregnancy can increase your bp slightly. Mine are usually 117/77 but pregnant they are closer to 125/85ish

  • I was having a similar issue a few days ago.  I was running at about 140/90 and I am 17 wks.  My BP before pregnancy was very good 110/70.  My doc said that she was not too concerned because she did not find any protein in my urine.  I am tracking my BP 4x per day now and I average 130/80.  I suggest Omiron brand for BP machine.  I tried a generic brand from Costco and the readings were totally off, I had to return it.  My pharmacist said he found Omiron to be the most accurate.

  • I am not pregnant yet but want to soon. I am terrified because i was born at 25 weeks gestation and had to get blood transfusions. Other then needing blood and not breathing on my own for months i ended up pretty healthy.

Yet i worry i am more likely to get Pre eclampsia or blood clots that will cause stroke. My mom and sister had pretty normal pregnancies except for fact my mom had us all premature but most likely due to fact her uterus got messed up during a surgery on ovaries prior to the pregnancies. They both never developed clots or pre eclampsia.

Did anyone develop preeclampsia and /or clots regardless how normal relatives pregnancies were?
  • There's no correlation between what you went through as a baby to your risk of pregnancy now.
