Maternity Clothes Sizing

I was just wondering, in general, how does sizing work for maternity clothes? Will I most likely be wearing the same size that my normal clothes are, just in maternity? Since I am just starting to show now but my regular clothes are becoming incredibly uncomfortable, should I buy what I will grow into? I'm looking to order online at Old Navy as ours doesn't have a maternity section, otherwise I would just try some things on.

Re: Maternity Clothes Sizing

  • I buy the same size that I wear normally.  I ordered one pair of pants a size up from my normal size and they were huge - I had to wear a belly band with them even when I was 9 months pregnant.  Most of my stuff is from Old Navy and I've found the sizing to be true to my normal size, just with room for a belly.

  • You typically order your normal size.  Like all clothing, you will find some items run small or large for that particular size but the general rule is you wear your pre-pregnancy size.  That being said, I'm 5'1" and get an extremely large belly in the third trimester.  I have maternity clothes that I wear in 1st and 2nd trimester that do not fit me by the end of pregnancy.

  • Ok thank you! I think at this point I just want to invest in some maternity leggings and maybe some of those pants with the waistband. My tops still fit for the most part, just need to find some that cover my tush if I'm wearing leggings.
  • I generally get my prepregnancy size. Like anything though it will fit different depending on the style. All my old navy things are mediums but some do not fit until 3rd tri. Some of my target things don't fit past 2nd tri. It just really depends on the style and cut. This is why I wish more people carried maternity clothes in the store so I could try them on. I get a lot if maternity clothes from consignment shops or Varage sale because I don't feel bad wearing them a few times when I only pay a couple dollars.
