Baby Back Sweat

Last few nights when LO has gotten up for a MOTN feeding, I've noticed his back is sweaty...like through his clothes and swaddle sweaty. He's not overly hot that I can tell ( head is normal temp to the touch) we cloth diaper, but I haven't noticed leakage there.

I know adults have nightly back sweats, so I'm thinking this is a normal occurrence, but has anyone else noticed this?

  • My guess is that it's pee.

  • DS1 used to get back sweat when sleeping on top of a waterproof pad if I didn't have a receiving blanket or sheet between the pad and him.

I started using a doubler in his diaper at night and I think in this case it wicked out a little. You are correct. Thanks!

  • My LO sweats like a 600 pound man.  Anytime I pick him up from the car seat, his back and nape of his neck are sweaty no matter what he's wearing.

We usually don't have a problem at night, but maybe that's just because we keep our house pretty cold.  What temps are you keeping your house?  I feel like, he might just be too warm in a sleeper + swaddle.  Can you switch to a onesie+swaddle?  Or a lighter weight swaddle?

  • Yeah, wicking often seems like sweat. If you're using microfiber inserts, it could be a compression leak, too.

  • I don't have the heat on yet because it's been fairly cool lately. Last couple of nights its gotten down to 64 in his room, so I turned on a space heater to bring it back up to 70.

@unaveragejane, I am using micro fiber, so that might be the deal. They are fully saturated when I change him. Do you think a different type of insert for a doubler would be better? I have some cotton prefolds I could shove in there.

Yes, natural fibers would help. I'd try the prefold, and if that is still saturated, upgrade to hemp or bamboo.
