Hi! New here

Hello all, just want state that I am new here. TTC ... Took my awhile to figure that out. Lol. In the beginning stages, so that means I am totally green behind the ears regarding everything. Did my research: my insurance doesn't cover anything cause really... I've been married to my wife for 6 years definitely haven't had heterosexual intercouse in that time... DW joked about saying I have been trying. So now out looking for Dr or midwives that will do IUI. Didn't realize that people recommend 2 vials per insemination. That's gonna cost a pretty penny but we are determined.
Okay... Thanks for listening/reading! Glad to find this place!!
Cheers!!

Re: Hi! New here

  • Welcome! How exciting to start your journey! I hope it's quick and successful. Just my two cents- 2 vials is probably best but I got pregnant 3 times (only one time stuck) with single vial IUIs. My IUIs were medicated and monitored though.

    A & K, married 7/1/13.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.

  • Welcome!

There are lots of folks that do single-vial IUI cycles. I did 5 with our RE before we switched to IVF. When I talked to our RE about switching to double vial cycles prior to our 4th IUI, she told me that there was no research to show that using more than one vial (or more than one IUI per cycle) increased the chances of conception. If the IUI is well timed (and if you are working with a Dr and/or midwife as you mentioned, it should be), then one vial is really all you need per cycle. With that said, I never did get pregnant with IUI, so perhaps others might have more to say on this.

Also, if you don't mind my asking, where are you from? Looks like you are looking for local resources, and some folks here might be able to help you if they are from your area.

Oh, and one last thing.. you alluded to your insurance not covering anything because you haven't been trying to conceive on your own (at least I think that is what you meant). My insurance didn't cover anything either, and it didn't matter whether I had "been trying" or not. However, if your insurance will kick in for fertility treatments if you have an infertility diagnosis or if you have documented that you have been trying for a certain amount of time, a RE might be able to help you get your coverage "unlocked." I know a few people who were able to get notes from their RE that said they had been trying for a year on their own without success, or that gave them a diagnosis of unexplained infertility from the get-go so that insurance coverage would kick-in for them. Anyway, just a thought in case you do have conditional insurance coverage available to you...

  • Welcome!  Our insurance wouldn't touch anything for us, either.  Don't cover fertility treatments so each month really mattered since it was all out of pocket.  My wife and I were also told, as was PP, that two vials didn't prove to be any more successful than one so we stuck with one.  Ours ended up being about 2k/monthly for IUI cycles and we did 5 before going to IVF.  I'm 39, was 38 then, and had very unlikely chances of getting pregnant with IUI.  So glad we didn't spend more time on that route.  IVF, as pricy as it is, worked the first time.  Very pregnant with twins now.

Check in with us as you can about your journey.  Lots of knowledge and support here and if you have any questions, feel free to PM.

  • Welcome!! I switched jobs halfway through starting TTC and found out my new job's insurance will cover medication (to an extent) but will not cover the actual procedures. Before that we were using my GFs insurance that covered absolutely nothing.... Though my laparoscopy surgery was partially covered because my DR at the time sent it in to insurance as trying to rule out endometriosis...

So needless to say we've spent a pretty penny on TTC out of pocket, but the way I see it, the end result is going to be well worth it!!

We did IUIs first and then switched to IVF.... We're currently "taking a break" by doing home inseminations due to money restraints.... We've got fingers crossed that this works out better for us than the IUIs and IVF
  • Welcome.

I will echo PP that I have been told by my medical care team that there is no research supporting higher chance of conception with increased IUIs/vials in a given cycle.  I conceived on 1 well-timed IUI.  But I do know that there are a number of people on this board that regularly do more than 1 per cycle.  Hopefully they will chime in as well.

Not sure how far you've taken your questions about insurance.  Definitely speak with your provider about it.  Many insurance companies will cover some procedures with a diagnosis of IF (which they state should be made after XX months of "Trying") but they leave it 100% up to the Dr to make that diagnosis, no questions asked.  Most Drs here will make that diagnosis when you walk in the door as a same-sex couple.  Just my experience, in case it's helpful.

Good luck!  I look forward to getting to know more about you.

  • Welcome!

I was a "one IUI = one baby" lady, so it does happen.  As others have said, we believe the research showing that two vials is likely not more effective.

Main suggestion would be to go to a very good reproductive endocrinologist.  It can seem like a lot of money, but I believe that ours did very good test and were highly skilled at monitoring our cycles which helped our IUI work well.  That said, I have no issues, which helps.

Do a good work-up before to make sure you aren't starting out behind the 8-ball.

    Good luck!

  • Welcome!  Like may previous posters (PPs), I used one vial per IUI (and one IUI per cycle), resulting in 2 pregnancies out of 5 tries.  When I was shopping for an RE, I met with one who recommended 2 IUIs per cycle.  When I met with the RE who eventually helped me get pregnant and mentioned what this other doctor had said, she stated very firmly that especially with no other known fertility issues, there is no evidence to support that 2 IUIs (or 2 vials) are more effective than 1.  I felt relieved!  Best of luck with whatever path forward you end up taking!

To clarify, I didn't get pregnant on my first IUI,  but did get pregnant on a cycle where we only did 1 IUI/1 vial.

Also to clarify, when I said that you should speak with your provider to get clarity on insurance benefits, I meant your health care provider (and yes, recommending an RE here), not your insurance provider.  Thought nailing them down on exactly what codes they reimburse for (without getting into specifics of your situation) can be helpful too.
