entertaining baby

Just wondering what you guys do to keep your babies happily occupied while you do chores?

I have resorted to Daniel Tiger on Netflix if I need more time, like when im cooking. For short periods of time I can leave her on the mat with toys. But even with these options I have a really hard time getting anything really finished/clean. She has a hard time napping without me, and wearing her doesn't work if im cooking or lugging things around the house or sitting to work on a project.

Re: entertaining baby

  • I put his bouncy seat on our dining room table while I wash the pump parts or cook.   Singing to him will buy me a little time when he gets restless, but like you guys, I just do chores in increments.

  • I do the majority of things while he is napping. Or I put him in his rocker, or activity center while I'm doing stuff in the kitchen.
  • Sometimes I can get a few things done at naptime or in the evening while DH handles baths, but I do most of the housework after the kids go to bed at night. Little things like laundry and dusting get squeezed in during those short periods DD will lie happily on the floor or sit in the swing.

I know it drives DH crazy but very little housework actually gets done during the day when it's just me and the kids.

  • I put DS in his bouncy chair and put on baby Einstein. He loves it! Otherwise I wait until nap time.

  • We alternate between playmat, bouncer, and high chair with various toys. I used to wear her too but have kind of gotten out of that recently.

  • I have a cheap umbrella stroller that he sits in and I roll him around the house to whatever I need to go. He is most entertained when I make silly faces or funny sounds, so as long as he's close to me it seems to work. I just glance over when he starts to get fussy and do something silly.

We do every other week housekeeper. Inbetween I throw wash in with LO on my hip, and crock pot meals and I are BFFs.
  • We have a rolling bassinet which I put a boppie lounger in. I put LO in the lounger and roll him all around the house with me. As long as I'm moving around doing things (no paperwork or computer allowed!) that seems to entertain him, but I give him toys as well. He will outgrow that setup soon so we just got a high chair with great swivel wheels that I will begin pushing him around the house in.

  • Lately, I can keep DD occupied for about 10-15 mins with the play mats, bumbo, etc.  I just have to make sure whatever I'm doing can be done in about that time frame, or I have to be conscious of the time so I can go move her onto the next activity.  She'll sit in her highchair for a bit longer when I'm in the kitchen. I reserve full house cleaning for Sundays so DD can be entertained by H and I can get it done all at once.

  • Make ahead meals from freezer or quick weeknight meals are my friends. Letting go of stuff like making the bed and focusing on cleaning the floor where LO lays. I do bathrooms and vacuuming when DH is home and playing with our kid. I love playing with him too much to feel guilty about ignoring housework.
  • I throw him in the swing, crank it up, turn on the carousel thing above it, give him his pacifier and put his favorite stuffed animal on his lap. Also @flockofmoosen I love your name. It makes me laugh every time.

Playmat, jumper, swing. She no longer tolerates the bouncy seat, if she's not strapped in she just squirms right out of it. I actually tried her in the highchair tonight after reading this thread, and she did pretty well. She preferred sitting at the table with us while we ate dinner to watching me to do the dishes, though.

  • I just hired a cleaning lady last week. She will come every other week. After working full time, I want to spend my free time with my family, not cleaning. It's only $60 for 4 hours which is enough time for her to do the whole house. To cook and do dishes, I usually put DS in the swing to nap. He is usually content on his playmat or bouncer if he is awake
  • I use a cleaning lady a few times a year because I absolutely hate to mop and I didn't consider that fact before installing wall to wall tile throughout the house.

  • I asked my husband for a cleaning service for Christmas. He said "yes" before I could finish my sentence.

  • I used to let LO play on her kick n play mat but now she's rolling around and ends up scooting off the mat and in weird places after just a minute. She loves to hang out in her bouncy chair and watch me cook.
