2u2 help

So I'm not a super active poster but I need some advice. My DD will be 2 in two weeks, and DS is 10 days old. I know DD acting out (yelling, hitting us, doing stuff she knows she's not allowed to, taking DS paci/blanket) is normal behavior. But I don't know what to do to get her to stop. It's just me with them about 10hrs a day. How do you stay sane, keep baby safe, and help your older child still feel loved all at the same time?

Re: 2u2 help

  • I can't offer much advice, cause I'm in the same boat with a 25 month old and a 3 week old, but what I've been trying to do is spend quality time with my toddler while the baby is sleeping. Even if it's just a few minutes here and there, it seems to help if he gets my full attention at times. I was really worried with him acting out at first but it seems to have gotten better every day.

  • We praise DS for using "gentle hands" when he interacts with DD. He will go to her and pet her lightly. When she cries, he says "uh-oh" and tries to put her paci in her mouth. He also gives her kisses and will leave her alone if we say "let her sleep". All this we highly and constantly praise him for. He gets a wee too aggressive when she's on her floor mat, but we are working on that. But I just make sure that he gets a lot of attention when she's napping. I don't want him to think she's taking me away from him. I also ask him to go find a certain toy to take his focus off her. So he's very involved and praised. Don't get me wrong, he does somethings he shouldn't... Throw things at her, bouncy her chair, try to climb on her, etc, But it's more that I don't think he realizes it will hurt her, so he does have a consequence. He's also a few months younger than your LO, so I think he's not as aware of the change.

  • Other then the typical tantrums and wanting to destroy all the things, DD1 has been pretty good. She has molars coming in so she is understandably grumpy as of late.

The same as PP, I praise her when she is nice to the baby and make sure to spend time with her. It helps that H is on toddler duty when he gets home too.

  • And after all my success yesterday... DS is back in his total, unending tantrum mode. I'm drowning!

That's me, but hour by hour it's different...some hours she's great, and then she's pulling my hair.

So glad I am not the only one. It is like toddler bipolar disorder; and totally exhausting.
  • Toddler bipoler... That is absolutely the most perfect description! I'm stealing that. ;)

  • I've never contemplated giving him a friggin Benadryl before the last few days. I never would in real life, but oh the dreams I have....
