Need advice on taking 2 yr old to church for the first time

I'm going to be taking my 2 year old to church with me for the first time tomorrow.  I have never done it and have no experience with it.  He probably will not need diappers or wipes but I assume they will require he have them.  Anything else I should bring?  Will I just drop him off and let him cry it out or will they want me to stay?  Am I better to spend time with him and let him get comfortable or to just walk away?  Will I end up spending my church service in the nursery?  (They put the 2 year olds in the nursery with the babies.  At 3 they move them up to their own class).

Re: Need advice on taking 2 yr old to church for the first time

  • every church is different.  I can speak to what mine does.  I usually bring something to keep him occupied during worship (some churches let you leave the child in the nursery for the whole time).  I bring diapers and wipes, but he doesn't always need them.  He loves the nursery, and there is plenty to do down there.  They will usually give him a snack, which keeps him happy.  They give me a number, and if he cries, or if they need me the number flashes on a small screen in front of the church.  You could stay with your DS for a few minutes while he gets adjusted for his first time, but my church seems to think they do better with a fairly quick goodbye.  It depends on how comfortable you feel and how DS seperates from you.  My DS doesn't even notice I leave most times he's too busy.  Have fun!

  • Lately Lydia (2) has been having trouble in the nursery (we've been paged out of service for the past 3 weeks), but they always encourage us to just get them going on an interesting toy or coloring page and then bolt when they aren't looking, haha. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.?

Our church has diapers and wipes that they use unless the parent asks them to use the ones from their diaper bag. You might bring something that is his and makes him feel at ease- a cup or stuffed animal.?

I hope he does well! It's so nice to be able to relax and take part in the adult service. Hopefully our DD will get over whatever has been bothering her and let us do that tomorrow! ?

  • You definitely need to pack diapers/wipes and a sippy cup.  Our church has the classes split up according to age.  I suggest dropping him off with a quick kiss and "Mommy will be back to get you shortly." and then go.  Usually if they cry at drop off they'll stop once Mom/Dad is gone and they integrate into the class and get involved in an activity.  Our church provides pagers to each parent and will page you if they need you (if the child is inconsolable or sick).  I'm sure he'll do fine.  Enjoy!
