  • Hi! :-h just wondering what the job market is like in your neck of the woods? Is this surplus of teachers limited to the east coast?
  • Wow, I keep thinking something's gotta give here, but if it's that bad in Ottawa, I don't have much hope for the Maritime provinces. I graduated in May 2013, and I've been subbing since then. I'm just trying to decide if I should just put my time in here and hopefully end up with a permanent position in the next 3-5 years, or if I should move. Ugh, not a decision I want to make.

Oh my gosh, you must have been so glad to hear the news in BC today. So glad you guys finally have a freaking contract, we here in Ontario (ETFO) have been hearing and talking about you a lot. Hope you get some stability out of this.
I actually teach at an independent school, so I haven't had to deal with the strike.  I'm very happy for my fellow BC teachers though.

The reason I work in the independent school system is because the job prospects in the public system were so dismal where I live (Vancouver).  When I graduated (11 years ago), the 4 school districts near me were not even accepting applications for TOC lists.  Friends of mine have waited 4-7 years to get a permanent contract.  Even then, they end up being moved from school to school every year until they gain enough seniority.  Class size and class composition are hot topics in BC right now. Maybe after this new contract comes through there will be more teaching jobs available?  I am very happy to be in an independent school right now (although there are, of course, pros and cons to both).
