Breached Baby

Hey ladies! Im not on here much but I had a question about having a breached baby. The doc told me that my son was breached when he revealed that i was having another boy..that has been a couple months ago. My question is does the doc usually check later on whether the baby has changed his position or how does one know..it may be a little ignorant on my part but im curious.

Re: Breached Baby

  • Yes they will recheck. Nothing to worry about yet. Baby still has lots of time to flip and most do.

This. I can definitely feel when my LO flips a lot does a cartwheel lol
  • My 2nd baby was breech until 38 weeks and finally flipped if it makes you feel any better.

  • I feel the flips and all. I was never told that my first was ever breached so i was kinda concerned when they mentioned it on this lo.
  • Thanks for the responses!! Makes me feel better!!!
  • My midwife said not to worry until week 34-ish, but I have already started doing the cat/cow "exercise" which gets him used to being head down and the doula told me a few days ago to act like my belly button is a flashlight and have it pointing towards the floor for at least 15 minutes a day. That will help also!

1 - If your doctor is not concerned then do try not to worry (easier said then done)
2 - Breech baby does not immediately equal c-section
3 - If you are concerned I recommend addressing your questions/comments with your OB since they are more qualified than the D14 ladies.

    Test
  • Trust me the rib kicks hurt the worst I'll take a few more weeks of breech to avoid them.

My first didn't flip until 33 weeks.

I had a co-worker tell me his son was breech and they actually watched him flip one night, they could see his forehead and nose.

  • Yeah it's still too early to worry about a breeh baby. If you want to though, check out the spinning babies website for info and things you can do to help baby turn.

  • I just asked my doctor yesterday if I was going to get another ultrasound to check if baby was breech or not closer to my due date... unfortunately she said I most likely wouldn't get another ultrasound because she'd be able to tell with her hands when the baby gets bigger. Kind of crazy (maybe not but I am a FTM and had no idea :))

  • A friend of mine had a breech baby almost to the end.  She had an u/s at 36 weeks and he still hadn't flipped so they scheduled the c-section for 39wks.  The morning of they did another u/s to double check, he was head down.  She was sent home and went into labor a couple weeks later.

Having a breech baby does not automatically mean c-section but many OBs/hospitals won't allow/attempt a breech vaginal delivery.

  • OP -  It could be worse.  You could have a transerve baby.

    Test
  • Oh yeah, and to answer the question, they can usually tell with their hands where the baby is positioned. My MW checked at every appt towards the end. If they can't tell they'll do an ultrasound because they do kind of need to know..

@laxmom44 hold up, the rib kicks hurt worse than the cervix and bladder kicks?  Crap

Oh good point I forgot about the cervix kicks. Still my daughter got some good rib kicks in.

  • Any idea if your odds of having a breech are higher depending on whether or not your mom had one? I was a footling breech (sorry, mom!)... Def wouldn't want that!

Unfortunately, they've found evidence to it being genetic. But it's still pretty rare and doctors can detect it earlier now and try to help move baby into the right position. I don't know if the pelvic exercises help or not, but I'm doing them anyway - worth a shot.

  • My baby was in breeched position. They said that it was okay for now because they move so much. As long as the baby is in correct position later (I think 30-35 weeks) there isn't a reason for concern. They will check at your next ultrasound and make sure everything is fine.
  • DD was head down at 34 weeks and breech at 35 (and stayed that way). I did not have to option to deliver vaginally breech, but I did have the option at 37 weeks to externally flip her - which I wanted nothing to do with. She was born before 37 weeks, so in the end, the option was off the table too.

  • Thanks, @ColeyCannoli‌ ... That's freaky. Fortunately, our technology is way more involved today than it was even just 28 years ago so I'm sure we'd all have an eye on it if that were the case. My poor mom didn't know until she was about to be wheeled out for a CS and I stuck a foot out...

I can't have that.... Highest concentration of gluten out of all the grains... No good.
Dont Americans use the word spelt? And not the grain. Lol

My husband and I got into a debate once over spilt and spilled, of course to him I totally made the word up. I wanted to smack him.

  • I'll give you ladies an update on Thursday when I have to go in for the glucose test (yuck!!) hopefully he'll end up head down. I use -ed for words that are in the past tense, fyi..dont know if its the correct way but i don't think it really matters unless you're writing something formal (imo).

Oof, that's gotta be scary. But at least the exact situation is really unlikely. Though you are with us today so it at least ended well :)

  • At my last u/s my baby was both! He had his head down, but he was touching his toes , so only his rump was up. The tech couldn't get a pic of his hands bc his huge feet were in the way! OB wasn't worried.

I was a breech baby too @ThePregosaurus‌! Though I was frank breech and head down until the night before my mom went into labor (I'm such a peach, I know lol). Doctor did an internal exam and told my mom "well, that's not a head!" She delivered my vaginally because she's a freaking rock star and because my brother was so massive that her hips were like permanently separated (ow!).

Oh geez. I can't even. And I'm sure that was all without drugs too! My mom said the doc had to reach in to grab the rest of me since only 1 foot was out and he pulled while 2 nurses pushed hard on her belly... Nobody can ever one up these types of moms-- "Oh, you broke your leg? I pushed a baby out backwards/folded in half/sideways without any meds. Nbd."

Yeah, my last U/S (24 wks) showed baby breech. At this point, I haven't the slightest clue which position baby is at any given time. Is that terrible?

  • I had an ultrasound yesterday (I'll be 29weeks Friday) and my little darling is high and transverse. My doc laughed and said it didn't matter how she sits, hes going to get her out his way anyhow. I'm still doing the spinning baby exercises just because transverse flails HURT!
