Pregnant after a Loss

Question about flying in the 1st Tri.....

My PGAL brian will not stop. My DH and I are set to go to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic next week for our wedding anniversary. We booked this trip back in Feb, before getting pregnant.

I know that there are precautions that I will need to take when there such as only drinking bottled water and making sure all my food is cooked well. But I am still worried b/c there is Malaria in that counrty.

I know that it is a decision that me and DH will have to make but I was wondering what you ladies would do. Would you go? Is flying during the first tri safe for the LO? What kind of sun block and bug repellent is safe while in the 1st tr?

Sorry about all the questions. Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

Re: Question about flying in the 1st Tri.....

  • We went to Florida when I was 6 weeks pregnant and I was nervous, too. I just made sure to stay hydrated and I opted for a pat down at security instead of walking through the scanners (even though they are supposed to be safe). I understand your anxiety. I think you will be fine! I'd check with your dr on questions, but otherwise have a great time!!!

  • I found out I was pregnant in Belgium, the flight home I just made sure I was well hydrated (and the rest of the trip for that matter).

I would call your OB their are anti-malarial meds that are safe for pregnancy, but I think the chance of you coming in contact are fairly low in a densely populated area, here is a link to the CDC recommendations, a travel medicine clinic would probably also have great information for you.

  • Like all of the PP said, you should be fine flying in your first tri.  Just make sure you stay hydrated and if you have a long flight, get up and move around every few hours.  Also, I flew cross-country at about 14 weeks and the first leg of the flight I was a little nauseous, so make sure you've got whatever you use for that with you (for me it was lemon hard candy and water).  After that first leg of the flight, though, I was fine.  And I was fine on the flight home.

I've been using regular sunscreen (I think it is Target brand).  I asked my doc back at the beginning of summer and she said that was fine.  And I think you just have to make sure your bug spray doesn't have DEET.

As for the Dominican, one of the things that you might not think about is to use bottled water for ice and even for brushing your teeth.  Punta Cana is very much a tourist area so all of the restaurants more than likely use filtered water for ice, but if there's a fridge in your hotel room, use bottled water to make any ice.  And I just poured a little bit of bottled water into a glass and used that for rinsing my mouth and toothbrush when I brushed.

    Have a good time!
