CP: Would you monitor your kid's cell phone calls/pics/texts without them knowing?

**I AM NOT DOING THIS - IT'S JUST A DISCUSSION AT WORK** There are services out there that will forward everything (pics taken, messages sent/received, call logs) from a kid/teen's cell phone to the "adult" account manager's email/phone/web so that the "adult" can review it all. Would you consider doing this without the kid/teen knowing that you are doing it - without previous behavior that might warrant tracking?

Of course! I need to know everything that my child eats/thinks/says/does at all times on all days

Never! There's never any reason for snooping...

I don't think so, but I reserve the right to change my mind if he/she does something in the future that makes me think I need to watch closer (for a duration)

Not without them knowing that I could, but I might use it after telling them that I was going to do it.

  • Loading the player...
  • We will certainly know their passwords to everything and reserve the right to check out anything when/if we feel the need. I wouldn't do it behind their back though. If my kids have earned our trust, I won't feel the need to check in as often. If not, that will seriously limit their access to technology, as well as their privacy.

  • Oh the trouble so many of my students have found themselves in because of social media. That I discourage use of and absolutely monitor for their own good. Too many kids share every single inner thought and it causes so many issues. My job as a parent is to help them navigate through life including cell phones and social media
  • I voted the maybe one. I like to think I wouldn't go behind her back, but I absolutely will reserve the right to check if I feel the need. And even if I didn't suspect anything, I think it makes sense to keep tabs on any social media. W will be forced to be my FB friend. ;-)

I like @avswolf's approach in general.

W's teacher has a 13 year old daughter who downloaded some app where you can chat with random people. Apparently after like 2 days of her having it, some man was sending her pics of his junk. W's teacher flipped her shit, understandably. But it just goes to show you how scary the internet can be.

  • @katybriggs - actually baby G doesn't, but his 11.75yo, going on 25yo, sister is on the verge of getting one.

  • I would reserve the right to view any texts, emails and whatever but I would not do it behind my kid's back. I want my kids to trust me but also understand I am their mother not their BFF.
A friend of mine recently went to Google something on her SD's phone and there were like 40 Web pages open. Most of which were porn. Her SD is 13. They had a very long conversation that evening.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I wouldn't do it without their knowledge, but I would reserve the right to monitor without giving them warning. (They would know I COULD, just maybe not when)

    This exactly.
