Tubal ligation?

I know I mentioned this to someone on here in another thread before, but I'm considering going in for a tubal. My OB told me I wasn't a good candidate for an IUD and recommended that DH have the vasectomy instead, but that's apparently going to be more complicated than we initially thought and would require a trip to a surgery center and sedation. So I'm thinking about it. Has anyone on here gone through a tubal, either during a c-section or otherwise? How has it been for you? The web is so full of horror stories that I'm kind of hoping to hear at least SOMEONE say "oh, it's been great, no issues."

I had a tubal during a c-section. It was fine. No issues (other than the occasional sadness that I won't have any more babies).

My mom had a tubal during her c-section in 1990. I know it was 24 years ago, but she had no issues. This was after her 4th pregnancy and second c-section.

I have not, but was considering it too. I'm doing essure instead mostly because it doesn't require anesthesia or lifting restrictions. Otherwise, I would have done a tubal because it takes effect immediately. That is nice, no waiting period or testing to be sure you are actually protected.

My mom had it done in her 20's with absolutely no regrets. A good friend of mine had it done a couple of years ago during her c-section and is happy. My sister is having it done during her upcoming c-section too. Everything has risks and the internet can be scary for researching.

No experience but this is the route I will probably go when we are finished. I have csections so might as do it while they are in there.

I had mine during my c/s. I would not be willing to do it had I not already been open. A vasectomy is far easier.

I had it done during my c-section. No issues, but it has only been like a month. My mom swears it made her periods heavier but I also know people that say they experienced no changes.

If I did not have a cesarean though, H would get a vasectomy. I wouldn't have done it separately.

I am doing it during my c/section. If I wasn't having a c/s, DH would be getting a vasectomy.

I would have had it done during the csection, but I was at a catholic hospital so it wasn't allowed. And a vasectomy *should* be a much less invasive procedure, but apparently my DH has special snowflake nuts and things aren't positioned well for them to be able to do it simply in the office. So it's more expensive, they can't do it on a Friday so he'd have to take time off work, he'd have to be put under, etc. I'm glad to hear that there are a number of you who are happy and without significant complications.

DH had a vasectomy because from what we read even with a surgical center and sedation (both of which were standard procedure for his doctor) it was still a less invasive procedure than a tubal. He had it done on a Thursday and was up and playing with the kids on Saturday, back at work with only minimal soreness Monday.

We explored all options but agreed that since I had delivered 3 kids and had successful VBACs for the second two I shouldn't have to have another procedure done. The paperwork was all in order for a tubal had my VBAC turned into a c-section with #3.

Also, if taking time off work is a concern, just know that you'll have lifting restrictions and a few other things, so you will need someone else to care for your kids for a few days if you have surgery. So unless you have someone else available for that he will need to take time off anyway.

Lurker... I had it done in February. DH had a very minimal insurance policy and no days to take off work. I wanted to take advantage of the healthcare reform in case it was over turned (completely 100% covered). It wasn't bad. You are sore and achy. I did think it was going to be an easier recovery, but it wasn't horrible. My periods have been much lighter since, and only 3 days. No regrets.

My periods have been much heavier and longer since my delivery, which is obviously when I had mien done. If that is the reason I would have not done it had I known, it's horrible.

I asked about a tubal at my last appt and the side effect of heavier longer periods. I was told that most women have been on some sort of birth control for so long that they don't realize how a normal period should be. Birth control affects the length & amount so once you have a tubal and no extra added hormones then you see how your normal period would be. I want it done but am also scared by this.

I talked to my doctor about this because I am really concerned by that (because my periods are already so bad). So, a few months after delivering I am having an ablation (spelling) done.

I haven't been on birth control since I was married. I went from 3-4 day periods with regular tampons to week long periods with super tampons every hour and having to use pads for 4 or 5 days because I would just bleed through everything. So yes, I know the different between a normal period and a heavy period.

if mine are bad after stopping hormonal birth control, my doc agreed to an ablation. A friend of mine had horrible, severely painful periods after having kids and it helped her greatly.

That's what my doctors said. I told her I definitely wanted a tubal, but I was worried about heavy periods. Mine are already 7-10 days and super heavy. She said about 3 months after delivery, I could have one.

@notkateanymore They assured me that it was due to no birth control and maybe age. It is also listed as a possible side effect though so... who knows.

I know it's going to sound like I have a million excuses, but I've been under anesthesia a few times with no complications and he hasn't, and he has some health issues that might complicate it. I'm not exactly sold on the idea of going in myself right now, I'm just investigating a little to see what our options are before we go forward. I may also ask my doctor to revisit the possibility of the IUD, too.

I had one almost 7 weeks ago after having DD.

I had a deal with DH that if i didn't have a csec with DD, he would get a vasectomy and if I had a csec I would have my tubes tied. I knew I would be having a csec after some complications at birth with DS and I didn't want to chance anything with DD. Healing hasn't been any worse than recovery from a csec. I did have a break down like 3 weeks after I had DD, that I knew I wasn't going to have any more kids. This was after DH made a sly comment (he still makes them but my shell is hardening about it) and I was being emotional. We chose for me to have my tubes tied because DH is always away working (oilfield) and I knew I would be able to handle 2 kids by myself when he was away at work. Financially, we knew 2 would be great.
