Weaning

For my own sanity it's time for me to stop. I love breastfeeding but between pumping at work, lower supply by Friday, being the only one for MOTN feedings I'm exhausted and it's time. Everything I read online is so unhelpful as it pushes for a year. LO will be 6 months on 10/4 and I committed til that day but I'm done after. Any suggestions for those who have weaned already to make the transition smoother?

Re: Weaning

  • Swap one BFing for one bottle of formula to start. Then once you're supply has adjusted to not be engorged, do another one. Keep going like that till you're off.

Check to see if LO will take a bottle of formula- if it's a no-go mix half BM/half formula and then increase the formula until it's all formula.

For pumping days, either shorten each pump session, or stretch the time between them but keep them a similar length.

Maybe start having your SO give a bottle MOTN now too? My LO also comfort nurses a lot but when my husband gives a bottle she goes back down after her bottle and some bouncing and will stay asleep longer for him.
  • The only feed I have kept so far is the motn because it is the one thing I can count on to put him back to sleep. I give one boob the first time he wakes and one boob the second time he wakes . After that he gets a bottle if I'm desperate. Otherwise he is all formula all day. Worries about taking away my ability to give that last feed but we are going away for a weekend the end of the month and I am determined not to bring a pump.
  • I just started this process too. G will be 6 months on the 28th. On Friday I started replacing one feeding with a bottle. Today I'm already not feeling engorged and will probably drop another tomorrow or Thursday.
  • @mom2boxers‌ no he won't I think I bought every brand in hopes lol he will suck his thumb occasionally maybe he will pick it up more with less nursing.

@kkaew816‌ ok we can start this tonight I would love to sleep more haha does your LO sleep in her own bed?

@Rrrrrachel‌ thank you! I highly attribute making it this far to you, @swerbtastic3351‌, and this board. I don't know anyone IRL who breastfeeds. If I didn't work full time I know I would go longer it's just so difficult stressing about it all the time. I appreciate you being on this board and helping so many of us!

@staind a lot of people suggested that online I wasn't sure if that would work with milk but I'll def try it if I need it.!8 wasn't sure if you should do like all or nothing? I will miss the MOTN feedings even though I hate it haha

@Tferr02‌ I'm glad your not uncomfortable that's good to hear!
  • @chichi589‌ yes she sleeps in her own crib and room. We will be weaning at 6 months as well at the end of October- after reading some suggestions I'm going to gradually start now as she already gets some formula.
