Hi everyone! I posted before about concerns we had regarding my daughter. After a few years of being told we were basically over reacting lol, we finally had very competent assessments done. I have a huge report, from which I will be gathering questions no doubt to ask you all! After wavering between an ASD diagnosis and social communication disorder, they choose the autism diagnosis. The whole team felt she didn't exactly fit into either but she will get more services/help with the ASD dx. So here we are!
Her assessments showed some very atypical results, even atypical for an individual with autism! Much was made of her poor working memory, however it is in the 50 percentile. Compared to her other IQ test results it is very low. Across the board she tested in the gifted region, with the highest level of giftedness achievable for fluid reasoning. From what I have read and understood, that is deductive and inductive reasoning, which is closely related to working memory. So being off the charts in one and average in the other is very different. In fact the psychologist who did the IQ testing retested a few times because that glitch is something no one on the team who assessed her had seen before.
So that seems to cause a lot of our issues. My concerns for safety make sense if she has these memory issues. She is a kid who will hurt herself the same way over and over again, i.e. bang her head on the same spot, and never learn.
So far this year at school has been a mixed bag. One great day followed by a not so great one. She is quite comfortable in telling the kids she isn't interested on playing with them, and quite verbal in telling the teacher she is bored. So we will see how the year goes.
I will find out soon what she will receive through school. She does have a delay in gross motor skills. So hopefully we will work on that. Otherwise speech is great, advanced and odd to her peers, but no delays. No delays in fine motor etc. I am guessing lots of play therapy in our future. If I had to say my concern is that she would rather read than play with friends. She has been reading since 3, read Harry Potter at 5. She lives in books and that is her fixation.
I have lurked and gained a lot of information here so thank you all! I hope my paragraph breaks show up lol!
Re: Looks like I am joining this forum!
