August 2014 Moms

what do you/will you keep?

Specifically clothes, although I guess if you're hanging onto an heirloom high chair or something, that would count too! I saved all of J's not trashed clothes, in case we had boy #2, then i donated/consigned a lot of the unneutral stuff when we had the anatomy scan...

as my last child is starting to outgrow some nb things, I've started contemplating what I'll keep "forever", or until they're grown. I'm not much of a packrat by nature, I'm sure this varies!

I'm thinking each of their going home outfits, maybe some of Siena's holiday dresses? Like I bought her an adorable red corduroy by Hanna Andersson for this Xmas! In general, I don't want totes and totes of baby clothes that they'll never want in 30ish years! But I don't want to overlook something good to save, so what are your thoughts?

Re: what do you/will you keep?

  • I saved all the clothes from my first and am glad I did! I'm saving everything now for my sister. I will keep the handmade smocked clothes but other than that she can donate or sell it all when she's done having kids.

Oh right, handmade stuff for sure! Each of my kids has about 5 blankets, and they each own a hand knit sweater by my mom. She just got into knitting in the past 2 years, so anything she makes I'll keep

  • Not much, this was our last child. Probably the nicer outfits like a holiday dress and shoes I got from Janie and Jack for DD1.
Handmade blankets from great grandma is staying.
Gear will be handed off to a friend or family member if they want it.

  • Nothing, except handmade blankets or other handmade, customized items.

I am the opposite of a pack-rat.  I think I get rid of too many things!

My mom never kept any of our old clothes.  I do have an old receiving blanket that I used as a baby.  It's so soft, I've used it for all my boys.

  • Maybe handmade gifts. I don't have the storage space to be sentimental about clothes.
  • This is our first. Everything clothes I will keep in boxes by size. If we never have a girl again I'll probably still keep for my younger sister in case she has a girl. All the other items we have are gender neutral so I can keep all those for sure until we are done and then again will prob save for little sis.
  • This is our first, but with IF she could be our last. We are going to hold on to all clothes and gear for a while, but after a few years if it becomes obvious that we will not be having another then I will gift to friends and family or donate. What I will keep is her going home outfit and a sleeper I purchased. I got it after our verifi results came in and when we made it to the 2nd tri...it was the first thing I purchased for her. I will also probably keep other special outfits - like her Christmas dress and her baptism gown.

As for gear...we will keep all books. Our parents did for us, so many of C's books are actually our old books. My family bassinet will be stored until the next one is born, so it will probably go to one of my cousins. Everything else will likely be given away.

My SIL passed down all her sons clothes to me and we had agreed I'd add to the pile and we'd share it as she and I are FTM with the intention of having more... But I will be keeping a couple of special outfits (her style is different anyway), and she is pregnant and having a girl this time. As far as the big stuff we are each keeping most of our own stuff but a few things like the bassinet and some toys that could be outgrown

  • I'm planning on keeping a few outfits to be made into a bear (my friend makes them). I will keep a baby carrier for each child to pass onto them and everything else I will get rid of as they outgrow them. DS is my last so I am not saving anything for future kids.

  • Ive been burned by not hanging on to baby items already, so I'm keeping everything. I loan out things, or trade for something I need, but I'm keeping everything until I am positive I'll never have more babies.

At that point, I'll keep only the heirloom items — my hand crocheted baptism dress, DS's baptism suit, knit sweaters, the smocked baby dresses, etc. I will probably keep a crib if I still have one in functional status. I'll save it either to give to DD1 when she has kids, or to put up at my house for grand babies. But my high chair, swing, PNP, etc will probably be burned out and battered before we are done with them, lol.

  • Once we are done having kids all the stuff will go.  Either passed down or yard saled.

  • Probably just the knitted blankets for the most part. Fil made dd some moccasins that we will keep. Mil measured DS's feet so I'm sure he will get some too. Also it's Kiowa tradition for the males to wear their umbilical cord stump around their necks in a little pouch. While I don't see DS wearing his, we will keep it in a safe place with his baby mocs.

  • I'm glad someone else said umbilical cord stump because I have that put away too!. I'm saving everything in good shape for future babies if we have them, but will keep going home outfit and other special outfits including this years Halloween costume! Super excited to dress him up and show him off!
