Cloth Diapering

Potty Time

N suddenly has a renewed interest in sitting on his potty chair. He stays dry for extended periods of time and has peed in the toilet several times the past few days. I'm trying to figure out if it's even possible to do real PTing right now since little brother L is still enjoying hour-long nursing sessions several times a day. (I can barely sit and use my cell phone while he nurses, much less walk around and help N with toileting.) I'm just not sure the logistics are in our favor, but I'm still thinking on it.

So, for those of you who have PTed before, did you use a timer and send them to sit on the potty at certain intervals? If so, how often? And how long do you expect them to sit on it? Or did you just put them in underwear/leave them naked and wait for them to recognize the "need to pee" feeling? Or is there another trick to this?

Re: Potty Time

  • He knows when he needs to go.  Around the house these days he's either in undies or nothing.  He's loving it.  He just strips down and goes.  I have a seat reducer in the main bathroom and then tote the little potty to the kitchen/den (wherever we are) so he can access it quickly.

It took a few days after going cold turkey with from diapers to underwear and he's down to 0-1 accident a day.

I don't make him sit on it for very long and if he says he's all done peeing then I let him up.  I usually try to get him to sit a while after pooping to make sure he's all done.

But my child has had very little resistance to sitting on the potty.  I did do bribes, though, for the first "intensive" weekend.  Candy, toys and stickers from the dollar tree.  He's already over that point and it's only been two weeks.  Every couple of days I'll give him a reward for doing so well.

With two exceptions if he refuses to go on it, then he doesn't need to go.
    1)  first thing in the morning sometimes because he's tired and hungry and doesn't want to take the time.
    2)  When out and about because he's distracted.  In those instances I just take him every 30-60 minutes

  • I stopped asking all the time unless he hadn't gone in a while because he was getting frustrated.  Once I realized he was (mostly) going when he needed to, I tried not to ask so much.
  • Can I piggyback on this post and ask how long children use a smaller potty seat?  I'm wondering if I should just get the kind that attaches to the toilet.  It's a little pricier,  but it's so much more convenient and I'm thinking it will be more comfortable for him for awhile.

We only ever did a seat for the toilet and I loved it. We several of these: smile.amazon.com/Prince-Lionheart-weePOD-Basix-Berry/dp/B005ZBI03I/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1410881723&sr=8-14&keywords=toddler+toilet+seat

A could put them on and off herself. It was sturdy and comfortable, but easy to wipe and keep clean. She doesn't use it anymore except for some times when she is going to poop.

I'm really glad I never had to wash out a gross bucket.

Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste,
    It all revolves around you.
  • We have a trilevel house and one floor has no bathroom so the little potty is kind've a necessity for us.  Plus I think actually being able to see it when he's playing and such helps prevent accidents due to distraction.  I just use the diaper sprayer and some bleach spray to clean it.
  • We are PTing DS2 right now (turned 2 last week) and he has had 1-2 accidents in the last week. He also stays dry for longer periods of time and started fighting/protesting wearing diapers so we just let him run naked at home. He uses both the potty ring on the toilet and the little potty which I have brought into the area between our kitchen and living room which is where we spend most of the day. I'm housebreaking a puppy at the same time and we can't be tied up in the bathroom all the time so this way is working for us. He's younger than ds1 when he PT'd and needs our help getting on and off the toilet. I just use a sprayer and one of the Clorox wipes in it and it's NBD. We had our first trip out of the house yesterday sans diapers for about 2 hours and he did well. I don't do the timer method with him it backfired horribly on me when I did it with DS1 to where he started refusing even to try an we had to stop for a few months....so after 2 pee accidents tht he "helped" clean up a few days ago when we started he's been fine. Oh and we were using fruit snacks in the very beginning as his reward for going, stickers for trying, and now we are weaning down the fruit snacks.
I only have him try when we are leaving or when we are out and about.

  • N is too short to climb up on the toilet, and he isn't very stable up there on his own since his feet don't even reach the step stool so we are a gross floor potty family.

    LOL. New badge.
  • Can I add another dumb questions? When do you expect the boys to stand and pee, rather than just sit?
  • I would assume when they're tall enough?

  • We're a gross floor potty family, too.  DD1 could use the little seat on the regular toilet, but I can't figure out how to keep DD2 from playing in the toilet when it isn't occupied.  I had to install a toilet lock on the regular toilet seat to keep her out of it.  Most adults can't figure out the toilet lock, so I can't expect DD1 to work it.

Can I just add how much I love the $5 little potties from IKEA for an emergency car potty?  We rarely use it, but when you're driving home from somewhere and DD says she has to go NOW, it is so much easier to pull into a random parking lot and have her go, than try to drag both girls into a gross public bathroom, if I can even find one fast enough.  It may sound gross, but it is so much better than cleaning the car seat.

They actually have DS stand to pee at DC  (because he was peeing on his shirts and stuff when sitting since they don't have pee guards), but they have those tiny toddler toilets.  It won't work at home. He's not tall enough and the floor potty is too shallow.

He seems to understand that he sits at home and stands at DC. They tell him to "go make bubbles." LOL  I would have never thought of that.
