EBF Pumping On Vacation - WDYD?

I'm looking ahead to a vacation we have planned and I'm wondering what you EBF moms would do about pumping? I currently pump at night before bed to build freezer stash (and make myself more comfortable) and that's it, unless I'm missing a feeding. I'm not sure if our hotel has a refrigerator, though I'll bet that it does, but even if it does we're driving at least five hours to get to our destination. That seems long to me to try and transport refrigerated milk without buying ice packs right before we leave or something. Plus, we're gone for five days, so what I pump at the beginning won't even necessarily be good by the time I get back unless LO drinks it, which I can't imagine why she would have
to.

So what would you do? Pump and dump? I don't really see another option, but feel like I'm missing something.

If you really need that pumping session to be comfortable, I would pump and bring the milk back with you in cooler with ice packs or ice. Milk can be left out 5 (to 8) hours and in the fridge 5 (to 8) days so you're still safe. I wouldn't automatically pump and dump. (Unless it smells/tastes funny when you get home).

  • @Dixon83 Right now I do. I wake up engorged and leaking because my baby STTN if I don't pump. I know I could wean off of this, but that nightly pump is how I'm building my freezer stash one day at a time.

  • I was offered a free fridge in the room for DD1. I didn't actually use it for BM, but it was nice to have in case I did need it.

  • i used to do the same for my freezer stash, as for the vacation so you can either stop pumping so your supply regulates and you dont have to pump during your vacation ( you can start pumping again once you get back) this would prob be a week before it actuallly goes down.

    or

i went not on a full on vaca but me and hubby left just for a weekend and i had to pump and dump.... the hotel had refrigerator but my milk unless i freeze right away it last about a day or two in the fridge, so for that i would do a trail and error and see how long your milk last and you can go from there.

    and

i was also away from LO from a whole day and that hotel had refrigerator i pumped the whole day i put my milk in that refrigerator and freezed the next day, that was like 2 months ago, to find out now it was bad because i waited and hotel refigerators are not that cold anyways.

i hope that kinda helps a little bit

  • So you kind of have to pump for comfort. I'd ask for a fridge in your room - I've heard you can get fees waived if there are any because it's a medical need. Bring a small cooler, load all the milk up & get ice from the ice machine. I flew from San Francisco to California with 2 bottles of milk in ziplock bags with ice. The milk was still cold when we got home some 12 hours later.
I agree with this. Request a refrigerator for your room and if they try to charge you, tell them its for a medical need, not for ALL THE BOOZE. 5 hours with milk in a cooler bag of ice should be fine. I've done it before and the milk was still cold.
  • I was in the car 11 hours with milk in a cooler and it was fine. Ice and water will actually keep colder than just plain ice. And if you're really hesitant add some salt too. Strange I know, but we do it at work to keep drinks colder longer.
  • We called a head about the refrigerator. I still pumped for DD1 when we went on vacation. Make sure to bring a decent cooler and lots of freeze gels (or go buy ice and package your milk in gallon ziplocks). The only place I had a problem pumping and storing was at the Beverly Hilton.
  • The Fontainebleu in Miami was a nightmare for pumping and storing. They charged the room for a fridge and refused to freeze our (2 pumping ladies) gel packs  the night before we left. We fought for hours with them over those two things and in the end they did what was right.
