Tired, Achy Legs

Hi All,

This is my first post, but I've been following the board since April!

I'm 28 weeks along and I've noticed in the past few weeks that my legs are feeling really tired and heavy. I swear, sometimes it feels like they weigh 500 pounds! It's become so bad that I can't run anymore, which I've been doing consistently up until this point. It's actually pretty painful, more so on my right side than left. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal?!

Welcome! I'd suggest asking your OB. I've been achy in places I never thought were possible but I'm sure it's just part of the whole pregnancy thing.

  • Whenever you are sitting down, try to prop your feet up a little bit (if you sit at a desk, a small waste paper basket works really well). Try not to cross your legs when you sit, it decreases circulation and is hard on your hips.

Also, make sure you aren't locking your knees when you are standing. Locking your knees can cut off circulation.

If you are on your feet a lot, get some nice inserts for your shoes and look into a pregnancy support belt.

There is really no escaping how uncomfortable pregnancy can be. :( Prenatal massages can help some and are just plain awesome.
  • I spent a day standing and the next day thought I was dying. I started drinking a lot more water ( 8 oz every hour at work), eating two banana a day, trying to never just stand in one place ( walk around), and I prop my legs up when I get a chance. I am fine now and willing to do anything to prevent that pain again.
  • Welcome! Definitely mention it to your OB, also I'm a big fan of Epsom salt baths for aches and pains. I work on my feet, and usually take a couple of them a week.
  • I was having same problem until I bought Birkenstocks. I wear them every day and I'm fine now! Still keeping my support stockings around as backup help.

  • I have had the same experience but mostly on my left. I asked my midwife and she said normal. Leg cramps are not normal when there is a lot of swelling involved. I get this shooting pain and soreness from the inside of my thigh to my vagina and I have to favor that side when I walk. I have talked to other women too and they said it happened in their second pregnancy over their first. This is my second pregnancy. I feel so heavy and tired as well.
  • Running also puts a lot of pressure on your joints so the extra weight can be causing you to feel pain more. Plus the regular achiness and soreness of pregnancy.
