What's your mom dress style?

What's your style since becoming a mom?

I need a new style. Before moving to sydney, I worked in the arts in NYC, was very fit and was single. So lots of high heels, dresses and skirts that just aren't appropriate now. Now I'm a stay at home mom, live near the beach, walk everywhere and heavier than I've ever been. I'm about 5'6 and weigh around 143. I'm planning to lose about 10 pounds so not sure what to buy. Help! :)

  • @wasnotwas I said heaviest that I have ever been. None of my former clothes fit. I haven't purchased anything new really and sometimes look a sausage when squeezing Into my old clothes!
  • @libberluru‌ new jeans would be a good start. I also like the idea of leggings and tunic for autumn. We are headed Into summer and it's super hot here now.
  • I've been trying to revamp my style for Fall. I've fallen into the tank tops and soft pants category. I feel very frumpy so I'm taking it season by season and redoing my wardrobe. I've used Pinterest a lot to pin outfits and then imitate the styles that I like.

If your clothes don't fit you can feel awful at any weight.
So buy a size that fits?

I think that was the point? She wanted to know what style to buy so that she could have clothing that fits.
That's why I said I wasn't playing. Throwing around actual weight numbers is a quick way to polarize people. If it was worded "my clothes don't fit halp" I wouldn't have the same issue

@WasNotWas‌ you are a bit snappy today. I described myself because in my mind that would help make suggestions for clothing. People write some very graphic things on here and I didn't think sharing my height and weight would trouble anyone.

Edited for wording. I don't want to argue. I'm just trying to express myself.
  • @WorkinIt‌ that's hilarious!!

@steamboat123‌ sounds like me except I usually have converse on.
  • @GalLaura‌ I understand where you're coming from. While still considered small by most, to me, I have gained a bit of weight and my body has, of course, changed. So I don't feel as comfortable as I did before P. I tend to go for cute jeans and a flowy looser top or has side gatherings that hides my stomach. I've also learned it's all about the cut for jeans. Make sure they hit you where it flatters and not where it draws attention.

Express away but just know this is a public forum filled with all different shapes and sizes. Last I checked there wasn't a 146# size so I don't know why your exact weight would matter in people giving you advice. I've told you before that you can rub people the wrong way, and in this case it was me.

In the future, you should know that calling yourself heavy and then providing a weight will offend someone, no matter what the weight.

Also, see above where I gave you advice. Don't snap at the hand that tries to help, that's a saying right?

  • One more thing, if I seem "snappy" today, you seem a little body conscious between this and the boob post. Are you sure you aren't just going through the roller coaster that is weaning? Most of us have been there and can provide some real emotional support as opposed to the superficial support you seem to be leaning towards.

Breastfeeding is a mind fuck. Don't let it get you down

  • @WasNotWas‌ have you told me before I rub people the wrong way? Well thank for clarifying and speaking for others. I don't recall. I know you've been called a bully here and I've been the recipient of that.

I will clarify again... Heavy for me and my clothes don't fit and I'm not sure they will again.

You offered advice after others came in my defense saying they understood my point.

  • @pkp2‌ what brand jeans do you wear? I've been having a hard time finding the right fit.
  • @GalLaura‌ I actually have the Old Navy Diva fit that I like. They are cheap but have lasted me awhile. I also have a new pair of White House Black Market jeans that I'm loving. Also, look at where the pockets fit on your butt. You def don't want them too high.
  • I have been replacing a lot of my prepregnancy clothes as the seasons change. I'm very surprised that DH hasn't complained yet. My body has changed after LO and I am more self-conscious about tight-fitting shirts now. Since changing my job after maternity leave, I can also now wear business casual clothes to work instead of just scrubs. I just got some new tops and tunics at Target and Kohls. Unfortunately I still have to tackle dress pant shopping. Comparable to jean shopping @subliminalrabbit‌
  • I have been wearing mostly dresses and skirts as my body has been changing.  I have a few awesomely cut ones that I have felt good in clear across the 30 pound range that I've covered in the past year.  I find that the combination of some waist definition with a non-clingy skirt has worked well for me in terms of not having to replace my wardrobe a million times as I loose weight, yet avoiding looking like I'm wearing a shapeless sack.
  • I've found more often than not I wear skinny leg jeans, a tank top and a button down plaid shirt and flats. I'm very boring and apparently my wardrobe scream Pennsatukey so that might not seem so helpful. But I noticed with being uncomfortable with my body I am most comfortable in well fitting jeans and a long shirt that's fitted at the waist a bit to keep it looking like maternity clothes.

  • There are some cute ideas on Pinterest. Just search for "mom style."

I agree with pp that if you're looking to lose some weight, don't spend a lot now. But you can buy items that you should be able to wear, even as you lose. Fitting yoga pants and tunics, skinny jeans with loose tops, maxi skirts with t-shirts/long sleeve t-shirts. Try different styles that make you feel cute, so you can focus on how you look now, not how you want to look. I'm a WM but when I'm home I like to dress more sporty (yoga pants or capris, athletic tops and shoes) because dressing that way motivates me to move more with my kids (run around with them, roll around, hike/walk, dance, whatever). I'd also recommend StitchFix. I've had great luck with that service. Hope you find your new style. GL!
