Sleeping while traveling -help!

Please share your wisdom and suggestions!

We have a few short trips planned and need ideas for sleeping arrangements when not at home.

A few weeks back we went away for the weekend and tried to use our pack n play. B hated it! And woke up every few hours crying. It's smaller than her crib, the pad is thin and she's already 23 lbs - weight limit is 30.

So I was curious, at what age can a child sleep in a regular bed (without us being in the bed with her)? And what are we supposed to use/ bring with us when we travel between now and then?

Thanks, hoping we don't have to spend a ton but with the holidays coming up and the pack n play being miserable for everyone just not sure what our options are.

  • I pad the pnp with spare blankets and then pull a big sheet over it and tuck the top sheet under so there aren't a bunch of loose blankets. It's still firm, but there is a more padding there that way.

I have also heard of success with travel cots. DS starts daycare tomorrow and they are going to have him in a cot with blanket instead of crib.

  • I am in the same predicament. Even though we follow the same bedtime routines, DS hates the pack n play that hotels check out.
We stayed at 4 different hotel brands and only 1 had actual cribs to use, instead of PnP's. I decided the next time I travel I will use one of those baby gear rentals in whatever city I'm in. It may be costly but otherwise, bedtime is a nightmare.
  • Thank you all for the advice.

I should have clarified, we had used the PNP in the past with success, it's just recently that she hated it, I think because now that she's bigger it's no longer comfortable for her.

I think I'm going to try the advice of either adding some cushioning underneath or looking online for a thicker mattress pad that will fit.

I'll try it out at home first and this will buy us some time, hopefully, through the holidays, but I think we'll still need something between the PNP and her being able to sleep in a real bed on her own.

And if she still hates it then I'm at a loss!

I like the idea of those little foldable camping cots, they are low to the ground and big enough, but she could still roll off, which wouldn't hurt too much if I put done blankets on the floor, but then if she's awake she could just start crawling away!

  • We bought a thicker pack n play mattress and that seemed to help a lot! We spend every other weekends at my ILs so it was worth the 30$. We got ours off of amazon.
Did you get the Dream on Me 3" Foam Graco one? This is the one I'm considering but some review say its too firm?
  • @LizB8943‌ I though that was pretty creative, I even looked up purchasing a foam egg crate instead. Sadly for you it's not really any cheaper!

    Thanks @Rebeccag428‌ appreciate the photo!
  • I bought à pnp mattress off eBay for ds That makes it far more confortable. Also you might want to put lo in the pnp a few times at home to get used to it.
