What time do you put LO to bed?

DS is 2 weeks old and I'm wondering what time is appropriate for bedtime. I usually aim for about 9 but I feel like it often takes an hour to get him to sleep. Should I just do bedtime later? Earlier? He's usually napping at like 7 so I'm not really sure what to do.

LO naps late too (5 or 6 til 7, sometimes later) and we've been debating about waking him earlier but we are currently listening to the gals here (sleep begets sleep & no schedules yet). So we go up to bed & put him in the bassinet at 9 to 10 time-frame. Sometimes the "move" coincides with a feed and sometimes it doesn't (we don't wake him up to "mark" the move from daytime area to bedtime area - only if he's already waking to eat).

  • We tend to start the bedtime process around 8:45/9pm. He usually has a feeding around 6:30/7 and then awake daddy time (stories, songs, tummy time) this gives me time to rest and pump. then when 9ish rolls around, we start bedtime/bathtime routine. If we time it right, he'll be sleeping before 10pm after a feeding.
  • I thought we had a bedtime down but now at 7 weeks it's pretty much when DS feels like going to bed. If he isn't ready there is no putting him to sleep. So it ranges between 8:30-10:30.

  • Bedtime...I wish! Unless I'm considered a bed, no time has seemed like bed time lately.

  • I think of things still as more of a cycle than a bedtime :)

DH and I are naturally up late, so we can usually count on a midnight feeding just before we go to bed, and then DS sleeps until 5 or 6 (if I'm lucky), and that's our nighttime stretch.

  • I put her down usually between 8-9. Thats when she gets her long stretch. She typicallyis up 2 times to eat at night and our day starts around 7-8. I made this schedule going off her cues. Im sure it will change soon.
  • Now at 8 weeks it's around 9-9:30.

  • I am in the what is a bedtime camp. We have a very inconsistent sleeping and eating schedule here and DS is 4 weeks old. Hoping for a little bit of a schedule by the time I start working again in 3 weeks.

  • Yeah, no real bedtime here. He's usually with us til we decide to go to bed. Right now I'm wearing him and he's asleep. We'll probably all go to bed after his next feeding, but that feeding time changes ech day still. Hopefully by the time he goes to daycare in November we'll have more of a schedule. I'll let DH get him on a schedule the month he's home with him! Haha.

All I can say is, thank goodness for swaddle mes and halo swaddle sleep sacks.  I put him down between 10 and 11pm every night.  He's usually awake in the evenings so eventually I just decide to do one last diaper change, feed him, and then put him to bed.  I don't always have to swaddle him, but lately he's been really fussy with nighttime feedings, acting like he's still hungry after he's drained both breasts.  Maybe he's hitting a growth spurt.  However, if I swaddle him, that calms him right down and then I give him a pacifier and rock him to sleep.  Usually that works..

Except... just as I was writing this, guess who just woke up about 20 min after I put him down? Making me look silly, haha.. except he went right back down, so hopefully it's for a while this time.  Might still be hungry but I need more time to make more milk!

ETA: He's a chub and gained nearly 3 pounds in 5 weeks.. so I know he's getting more than enough milk. Give mommy a break!

  • My LO seems to need consistency and routine...strange I know. She is 4 weeks. She has been following the same pattern since birth. Between 8-9 i change her, swaddle her, she eats and falls asleep and is placed in bassinet. She will wake around 1-2 and then 8-9.
I have always just followed her cues. Not sure its a strict bedtime but she seems to demand it every night so I follow her lead.
  • Hmm... Are none of you dealing with the witching hour(s) of inconsolable crying for an undetermined period of time? Nico is mostly done with his around 8:30 or 9, and passes out in his crib from sheer exhaustion. No bedtime routine to speak of, I look forward to it though!

  • We put him down around 11 pm. Well that's when we feed him last before the overnight shift starts. That's when we all go to bed.

  • Her last feed is usually between 8 and 9, sometimes she up till 10 after the 9 feeding if she's got a gas issue, but generally we're both in bed by 9. Last night she gave me a 5 hr stretch!!

  • Just curious @kountingsheep‌ and @BabyM82714‌ are you FF or BF? How do you get these long stretches of sleep?!?

I FF.. which I know keeps there bellies a little more full than BF. But she's just always needed the sleep I guess. When I first brought her home I tried waking every two hours, I would set my alarm, she wouldn't eat and just screamed. I finally just let her sleep and it was golden from there for everyone. My parents say I was the same way and that she has my personality (so far)

I seriously don't know how you ladies do it every 1.5-2 hours. I feel tired I can't even begin to imagine.

I fully expect my next pregnancy to be from hell and my next LO to be demon spawn for all this "good" stuff.
  • Lo is consistently inconsistent. There are nights in a row where he will sleep 11-6! And there are nights he wakes at 2am and fusses until 5am :(. Those are hard nights... But regardless, bath time/ soft voices and cuddles/bottle/bedtime is usually between 9:30 and 11... Depending on when he gets up from his late nap (which sometimes isn't until almost 8). He doesn't nap hardly at all during the day (just 10-15 min here and there) until the evening when he will take a 2-3 hour nap (usually from 4-7ish) but again, not always. I'm hoping for a better routine and a less fussy baby soon. He's almost 7 weeks.
  • We aim for 8-9 which usually works really well... That's when he gets his longest stretch.. He usually wakes up at 12 or 1am regardless so putting him down at 8 is ideal for all of us
  • I try to get her to sleep between 9-10. Sometimes it's 11 though. She'll sleep a three-four hour stretch, wake to nurse, then go back down for another two-three hour stretch. My issues are the mornings...she is fussy in the RnP anytime after 5:30 or 6 am. The latest I can get her to sleep in it is 7:30, and she's usually fussy enough about it that I'm not sleeping. But she'll sleep on my chest all morning long. So she sleeps but I don't.

  • I can't relate to all of these early bedtimes! She usually wakes up from her last nap around 7-8 and will stay up till she goes down usually between 11-12. It's usually a process with a lot of cluster feeding. Once she's down though, she stays asleep for 4-5 hours, wakes up for a quick feeding and is back down for 3-4 hours.

  • We are aiming for 8-9 pm. I hope to push it up to 8 pm for when I go back to work in 4 weeks.

  • I normally put her in the crib at 10pm or around then.
  • Bath time at 9:00, bedtime routine after 11pm feeding.

  • Totally jealous I'd these long stretches. Sometimes if we're lucky DS gives us 4 hrs but usually 2-3 and he's 7 weeks. Can't wait for longer.
