It wasnt until I bought a diaper bag this weekend that I realised, what do moms actually pack other than diapers, wipes, and clothes? And what did you think you needed to pack, but realised you didnt?
For a newborn? 2 changes of clothes for baby, 1 spare top for mom (seriously), nursing cover if you think you need, blanket/swaddle blanket PLUS a spare, diapers, diaper cream, wipes, nipple cream, bottles/formula, water bottle for mom, snacks for mom. Plus, wallet, keys, phone, camera?
As the kid gets older you can cut down on the number of clothes for baby (until you start potty training) and you, but you need to add in small snacks and toys.
So many good suggestions on here, I just want to add a small first aid kit. With the basics mostly bandaids, neosporin etc. I have used and refilled mine so many times.
Great tips from PP. I didn't like having a huge diaper bag so I always kept extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes in a ziplock baggie in the car. Of course if we were going to be far away from the car then I would need to carry it all with me. But for the day to day it was nice to not have to lug a huge bag around. We cloth diaper and those things take up a ton of space in your diaper bag.
My diaper bag currently consists of: wipes, A&D rash cream, diapers, formula (small container w/ 3 servings), water bottle (for formula), bottle, 2 changes of clothes, baggie for soiled clothes, 2 pacifiers, burp cloth, bib, 1 small bag of teething toys, teething tablets, thermometer, baby tylenol, and baby snacks (example:1 pouch of food and yogurt bites). If I'm out long, I'll also bring a blanket and a toy that makes noise... and my clutch.
This is what I carry now.. it will change obviously as your baby grows. right now my daughter is still going through the teething phase and I will not be caught dead without her baby tylenol and thermometer if a fever strikes. super scared of another febrile seizure. Also, it may sound like a lot but the bag really isn't that heavy. I'm 5' and carry the bag around plus my 18lb daughter just fine.
Diapers, wipes, rash cream, pacifiers, Nursing cover, blanket, extra clothes, bibs, diaper changing pad, snacks and sippy cup as baby got older, and my wallet, lotion, and sunglasses
Depends on how long I am going to be gone and where I am going, but generally: 3-4 diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, a wet bag, a burp cloth, a blanket, diaper cream, a bottle of water and a snack for me, a sling or wrap, my wallet, some lotion and diaper cream, Chapstick, and a book or my kindle.
PP have already said everything that I keep in my bag but I also keep almost everything in ziplock bags. I keep all lotions, creams, sanitizers in a bag. My stuff in a bag, diapers in a separate bag, etc. this helps me find things easier and keeps my stuff dry when a bottle or cup spills (which will happen). I also keep extra bags for dirty clothes and those times I have no where to put a dirty diaper.
For a newborn, its a TON. Spare clothes, burp cloths, nursing cover, diapers, wipes, diaper cream, paci, swaddling blanket in case he decides he wants to nap while out, bottle and cooler for some breast milk in case I was somewhere I preferred to bottle feed over nurse, fenugreek tablets for me, gas drops for baby, baby Benadryl and baby Tylenol in case of emergency (maybe not as a newborn), mini sleep sheep.
That's all I can think of at the moment. And rarely did I have ALL of that at once, but, depending on how long I was going to be gone, I would occasionally need every last bit of that. Especially if I was going to be gone for a feeding.

With a toddler, just diapers, wipes, and clothes. With a newborn, a few changes of clothes (you never know when your child will have a poo explosion in the Canadian tire parking lot), diapers, wipes, formula and bottles if you aren't breastfeeding, diaper cream. I dunno...I feel like half the things I packed when I had a newborn I didn't even need, but as a first time mum, I didn't know any better. Lol pretty much the necessities though...nowadays, I pack as light as I can
When DD was a baby I always kept two outfits, lots of diapers, wipes, bottled water, formula, a couple bottles, teething tablets, gas drops, baby Tylenol, adult Tylenol for me, snacks for me, and my wallet. Now I just carry a small bag with a few diapers, wipes, a change of clothes and some snacks.
