Cloth Diapering

How many diapers do you wash at once?

Now that I have a 1 1/2 year old and a newborn, I have been washing every day. I would like to go back to every other day washing. It's been nice to throw his rank ON diaper straight into the wash every morning, but washing every day is getting old.

Right now I have about half a 13 gallon pail liner full of diapers. Would it be a bad idea to go EOD? I have a larger HE FL that is 4 years old.

Re: How many diapers do you wash at once?

  • I have a 2 year old and a NB. I've let the diaper wash go a day and a half in between loads, but it is really pushing it for my washer. I use double stuffed pockets for the toddler, so even though he doesn't need changing nearly as often as the NB, his diapers still take up a lot of room. Plus we get the stinkies really easily if the load is too big.

  • That's what I'm worried about, stink issues...
I double stuff with bamboo for Logan's. Anders gets changed every two hours because he pees through all his NB stuff if he goes longer. He's in THX NBA AIOs mostly, so I'm worried they won't get clean enough.

  • I say try it. Make sure you adjust your detergent amount accordingly, and if your machine allows, use a longer cycle to make sure everything gets mixed and agitated really well. You'll know pretty quickly if something is off.
  • I think by quantity it's fine as long as your don't overstuff your machine. My diapers never even come close to half filling my machine.

  • I'm actually looking forward to having two in diapers because it will fill my washer more. I have a really old washer with only two size settings. The small is tiny, and the large is huge. Right now I have to add water from my laundry tub to the small load in order to get the right amount of water, but with two I should be able to use the large setting.

  • We wash Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old.  We also have a ginormous HEFL.  Monday's wash has been too full a few times and I had to split it in 2, but it's usually just fine.  It's all AIO's and Best Bottoms, and it's been fine.  I also don't soak my toddler's ON dipes.  Works for us.

  • I've been doing EOD for my NB and 18mo. We just have a top loader and mostly use flats, prefolds, and natural fibers. Even the occasional pocket is stuffed with a flat. So far it seems fine.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm going to try it and see how it goes. Now if I can get Logan's ON diapers under control, I'll be super happy! :) I have biokleen now, so im going to give it a shot.
