Second Seat

What are your thoughts on a good, affordable second car seat? 99% of the time, Cam rides in our Jeep with the Evenflo Symphony DLX installed. But every now and again, I need to take the Jeep to work to haul stuff, and so I'd like to find a less-expensive seat for our other car. He'll ride in it at most once a month or every other month, and just around town to the library and stuff (even though I know accidents can happen anywhere). Thoughts? I'd like to stay under $100, but if it's at TRU I can use a 20% off coupon.

Cosco scenera is a highly recommended extremely affordable seat. You can get it under 50. It's a no frills seat that sometimes requires a pool noodle to install level but it has high rear facing limits.

  • I don't have a brand rec but something I didn't think about for us was the second car seat needing a high RFing limit because switching from FFing to RFing and back again wasn't something I wanted to do. I didn't realize how tall DD1 would be and how fast she would outgrow a lot of RFing limits. I mean DD1 outgrew the Graco MyRide 65 RFing at 2 years. I ended up giving that carseat to my niece.

And since I don't want to spend $300 on a second car seat that would be used only occasionally we decided to forgo the second car seat. So we just make do with one car seat. And plus now with DD2 we would need 2 extra car seats and try to figure out car seat logistics and which seat can fit behind the front seats blah blah blah.

So if Cam is really tall I would think about how often you would use the second car seat and see if you can get a pretty high RFing car seat for cheap. If not I might would forgo it. Spending even $100 on a car seat that only gets used 6 times is a lot for us (we poor people). I know this is highly debateable but if you can't find a cheap high RFing car seat, do you know someone you trust that you can borrow a second carseat until he outgrows it?

If he is not that tall I wouldn't worry too much about and get a basic cheap carseat.

The tall kids make you have to plan and think.

I had thought about that, crunchymama, and also questioned whether I would end up spending as much as an 'expensive' seat in the long run if I ended up having to buy a booster later on. I am looking at the Evenflo 65 that has pretty similar RF weight limits, but it's $100 and down the road if I buy a booster, that's probably at least another $50 to $80? I might as well just get another one like I have now. He's not very tall, and probably won't be very tall, but unfortunately he's like me and his father and ALL of our height is in our torso, so that might make him reach the 1" limit more quickly. IDK.

  • And I wish I knew someone with a gently used seat from anytime in the last 5 years. I totally wouldn't mind that in this scenario if it were from a friend or family member, but I only know people with much older kids or kids about Cam's age. :(

  • Ok, it just occurred to me that step 1 should be making sure the current seat we have actually fits in H's car. Because if it does, then I can probably just suck it up and swap it out for those few times we need it. If it doesn't, then that also redefines my parameters for a second seat.

Yeah, that's what I probably should do. But then I also got to thinking that I'll probably drive the Jeep even more when it snows this winter. Sigh.

  • This isn't worth anything--I am just sharing my neuroses with you. I thought about buying a cheap car seat for my husband's truck but bailed at the last minute because I realized i wouldn't be able to handle it if lo was in an accident in the "cheap seat" (I.e, the one I hadn't researched as much, or had to sit forward facing in v. rear facing in a taller and thus more expensive shell, etc.)

I tend towards anxiety with my parenting choices, so I can just imagine the second guessing and hand-wringing that would accompany a scenario like that. So, for my own peace of mind, I bought identical seats for both cars. But, like @crunchymama11‌ I have a beanpole for my oldest, so the difference in a cheap seat or another radian RXT would be the difference in rear vs. forward facing.

Also, F switching convertible seats in the snow in the morning. But I have two--so maybe it would work if it was only very rare occasions and you just have one kiddo to deal with as you lug and reinstall...
  • Evenflo sure ride. I have the symphony in my car and sure ride in DH's car for O. I'm considering buying the sure ride for both cars this time around.
