Car accident

Last night my husband and I were in a car accident- another car hit us from the side (the side I was sitting on) and it caused a pretty big jerking motion, though no one was hurt. I thought I was feeling "crampy" afterwards but today I feel ok.
I already emailed my doctor because I was thinking all they would tell me is to wait it out and see what happens. But of course, I'm all worried so now I just feel like sharing and see what others think- am I correct in waiting it out 'til I hear back from my doctor's? Thanks.

Re: Car accident

  • How do you feel?? Any bleeding?
  • Loading the player...
  • Are you cramping? Having Pain? Bleeding?
Did you hit your belly on the dashboard? Were you wearing a seatbelt? Any dizziness, headache, or nausea & vomiting?
I always think it's best to go get checked out immediately following a car accident to make sure everything is ok.... But what do I know?!

I always thought for insurance purposes car accidents = immediate trip to the ER. Car accident injuries can get worse the next day or even the day after and I'd be worried that if you waited too long to go in their insurance could fight any claim you may have. If it were me I'd go in for that purpose alone.

ETA:  Google is telling me this is correct.  This source says to see your doctor, but if it happens over the weekend I'd go to the ER, personally.  https://www.avvo.com/legal-guides/ugc/after-an-accident-see-a-doctor-within-72-hours-for-your-health--more-settlement-money

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

  • I would, but that's just me. I'd be worried that even though I'm showing no symptoms that there could be something wrong internally that you won't know about until it gets worse.
  • I'm sorry this happened! I would go to the ER. Good luck. I hope all is ok.

  • I don't think I have symptoms. The cramping (which is off and on) could just be gas and I'm just freaking myself out! Definitely no bleeding. I think I will for sure try and go to the doctor tomorrow. We did tell our insurance that night that I am pregnant and didn't appear injured, and they said to let them know if anything changes, but I will try to get in tomorrow or at least to urgent care if my doc won't see me. Thanks!

  • I think if you feel fine it's ok to wait to hear back from your doctor but if you're concerned I'd go just to make sure. I'd hope he gets in touch with you tmrw to get you to come in, even just for a doppler check you know... I'm glad you're not hurt!!!

I would have gone to the ER immediately. In fact, I was in an accident at 7 weeks that wasn't as severe and I went to the ER. Everything should be documented right away. I wouldn't wait for a doc appointment. Just my opinion!

Just want to add - thank goodness everyone is ok!
  • I would have thought if you felt fine then wait to hear from your doctor. But @JCWhitey‌ makes a good point. I wouldnt have even thought of that.
  • Glad no one was seriously hurt, but I would definitely check in with your doctor tomorrow.

My friend had a horrible experience where she was t-boned, but since she thought she was fine she didn't go see a doctor.  Five days later she woke up and couldn't move her neck or back, but since she waited until then to get medical treatment the at-fault party's insurance fouht her for TWO YEARS and even after she won the lawsuit still only got about half of what she would have otherwise.  So unfortunately I learned from her horrible experience.

  • First off, I'm so sorry you are going through this. I pray you and baby are fine. But I think a doctor visit would be a great idea. If anything it will help ease your mind. Good luck and lots of hugs.

  • So sorry this happened to you! I would be freaked out too. If your dr can see you in the morning, that's what I would do just to be safe and calm my nerves. Sending good thoughts your way!

OP I'm glad you feel ok but sounds like you need to see both your OB for LO and your general practitioner for you ASAP tmo. Hope all is well.

@luckystarz and @mamatotwoo‌ - I'm so sorry you're having all these issues due to someone's negligence. T&P that you and your LOs will be ok and thanks for sharing your stories.

  • Being a bodily injury claims adjuster I would agree you should get checked out soon just to ensure should you make a claim on the 3rd party insurance they don't fight you for "delay in treatment". However, most wouldn't argue if someone was checked out within the first week or so, but every company is different.... Depending on the state you live in you have a certain amount of time to make a claim(statute of limitations). You can make a claim for pain and suffering even without any treatment, but don't sign any releases until you are sure you and the baby are fine. Once the release is signed, your claim is done.....
  • Please go to the ER.

Yikes! That's such a shame she went through all that trouble. Very good to know.
  • Thank you all for your advice! Going to the doctor today!
