Pregnant after a Loss

cerclage removal

hey all, i'm 35 weeks and 3 days pregnant. i had a cervical cerclage put in at 13 weeks and i'm scheduled to have it removed at my next doctors visit in a week, i will be 36 weeks 5 days. i'm really nervous because i don't know what to expect. so the big question for anyone who has gone thru this before... how long after a cerclage is removed do you go into labor? my EDD is Oct 17th and i just want to know if my baby will still be born on or around that date after the cerclage is removed.

Re: cerclage removal

  • No personal experience, but I think it will depend on how much is left of your cervix when the stitch is removed. If there's pretty much nothing left, then I'd bet on going pretty soon after the removal. I was on bedrest till 36wks with DS for dilation and ended up making it 2 more weeks before delivering. Again, not the same animal, but just goes to show that you can walk around for a couple weeks before the games begin.

  • My best girlfriend has had this done twice. While she was convinced she would go into labor that day (it is a possibility), her first baby stuck around in there and arrived 3 days before her due date. Her second came about 1 week early. Both times she got her stitches out at 37 weeks. Good luck!!!

  • thanks ladies! i really hope that my baby sticks around till on or around my due date... i really want him to be born in october because my husband and i were both born in october. i know it might sound a bit silly but we kinda planned this :)
  • @leeanne101 Do you know why they're removing it before 37 weeks? I don't know much about cerclage.

  • If the doctor is prepared to remove it they must be prepared that the baby MAY come if they do so.

The data shows that most patients are sent home after the cerclage is taken out at 37 weeks. About 10% of women deliver spontaneously within 48 hours of cerclage removal (reference for both statements below). The other 90% are within 2 weeks.

Does the doctor think your membranes are ruptured (water broken?) or that you have an infection? You don't have to answer here but those are reasons they may pull the stitch before the standard of care 37 weeks.

Good luck to you! I would get everything ready just in case....so you could hurry up and wait ;)
