Pregnant after IF

Spotting question - update

gsanchogsancho member
edited September 2014 in Pregnant after IF
So how many ladies have experienced bright red spotting and been ok?  I know spotting happens...but I have some mild cramping too, so I'm just terrified.  Any positive stories to balance out the million negative thoughts in my head would be great.  RE said to just rest, take a PIO shot, and go in tomorrow to check everything.

Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!
Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!

Re: Spotting question - update

  • Hang in there, sweetie!  Big squishy hugs.  Have you done anything different recently?  Sex, traveling somewhere, t/v ultrasound, etc.?  How far along are you?  Have you had an ultrasound yet?

I know several women who have had bright red spotting and been fine.  I believe @Milagros315 had regular spotting early on.  Full flow is much scarier (but I know several who have had that and been fine, too).  Even with full flow bleeding, there's still a better than a 50% chance of a ongoing healthy pregnancy - spotting is much better odds than that (but stay AWAY from Dr. Google).

Hopefully tomorrow will show a healthy, happy baby!

I had pretty serious cramping up until 8 weeks or so, but no spotting.  I know other women who had spotting and no cramps, and others with spotting and cramps.  None of the above is unusual.

Specifically, I know 2 close friends (and have seen other instances on my BMB) where women had full red bleeding and ended up in the ER thinking it was a miscarriage (one was at 6 weeks, one was at 11 weeks) and both now have healthy babies from those pregnancies.  So there's definitely, definitely plenty of reason to believe everything will still be okay!

  • Thanks @southernyankeegirl I'm 7 weeks.  Didn't do anything out of the ordinary...this morning I did some cleaning around the house since yesterday I was in bed all day with MS.  I only see blood when I pee, but it's a decent amount when I pee.  Cramping isn't awful, but it's there.

I just don't know how people do this.  When/if we get our take home baby, I can't go through this again.

So it's not spotting in your underwear?  Just when you pee, in your urine?  When you wipe?  If you wipe BEFORE you pee, is there blood, or only after?

Is it possible you have a UTI?  I've had bleeding when I pee before, and it's always a UTI.  Spotting during pregnancy is usually seen on the underwear first, not in the pee.  That makes me think it might be your urethra rather than your vagina that has the blood.

And I completely understand that it's too hard right now to imagine going through this again.  All I can say is just take this one step at a time - you don't have to make those decisions now, you don't even have to think about it.  You may never ever want to go through this again, and that's fine!  Plenty of families are 'one and done' and that's awesome. And you may find one day you want to go through it all again, that you're ready, and that's fine, too.  There's no one right answer.  And you definitely don't have to worry about that right now.  Early PAIF anxiety definitely sucks.

I will say once you get out of the 1st trimester, it seems to get a bit better.  Hang in there!

  • It is just when I pee.  I've heard of the UTI possibility - I've just never had a UTI like this.  And when I normally spot and start my period, the spotting is first apparent only when I pee.

  • I know several people during pregnancy who have had asymptomatic UTIs.  No pain, just bleeding or just popped up on a test.

I'm betting money that's what it is!  Hang in there!

Bonus is that you should be far enough along to see a baby with a heartbeat tomorrow :-)  If there's no heartbeat yet, it may still be a day or so too early to see it, but probably!

((Hugs)) A few things. First of all you could send DH to the pharmacy, as many sell UTI tests. That might be helpful. Also, drink lots of water--it seems to make a big difference for cramping for me. Finally, try to relax. Lots of women have had all kinds of bleeding and baby is just fine. As SYG said, the bonus is that you'll get to see your baby tomorrow!! Sending you thoughts and prayers in the meantime.

    ETA the right words. Sigh.

  • ((Hugs)) any amount of blood is scary! I had a SCH at 6w4d, the night before my first u/s. I had a gush then continued bleeding of dark red blood and multiple grape sized clots. I was convinced it was all over, but we had a happy little hb the next morning!

FX it's no big deal and that your u/s goes great tomorrow! Spotting/bleeding is common; although I know that doesn't help how you feel.

  • I did have spotting for about a week, but it was brown and after two ultrasounds and sex. No cramping with the spotting, but I did have cramping off and on through first tri.

There are definitely several benign things that can cause red/pink spotting. It sounds good that you don't have a heavy flow or clotting or anything like that. I hope that your doctor is able to see you quickly and that there's nothing serious going on. Hugs and FX!!

I totally agree with the IF stress.  I already told my DH and close friends this is probably it for me!  As if the process itself isnt stressful enough...we finally get where we have been striving for for years and it's 10x more stressful!

Hang in there..hugs your way.  Enjoy the bed rest...I'm jealous of that!

That's great news!! So glad to hear everything is looking good. Stay away from google as you await the next ultrasound--watch Netflix comedies instead!

Totally agree about how early pregnancy is worse than IVF. It's just so stressful. For the second time, I had a dream last night that I went to pee and the TP came back drenched in blood. As before, I actually had some spotting when I woke up. How on earth do my dreams predict this?! It was only a tiny bit, but it never fails to stir feelings of panic and dread, especially as we've just told family members this weekend. :(

ETA: Don't forget to drink TONS of water! It seriously has made cramping stop on multiple occasions.

  • Happy to see your update!

FWIW- I had unexplained light bleeding/cramping off and on throughout my whole 1st tri. I'm currently 30w4d w/ twin girls - everything has turned out completely normal.

I can relate to how scary & frustrating it is to deal with though. Thinking of you & crossing my fingers for a smooth road ahead! :)

It's twin girls!! Born on 11-2-14!
