mothers intuition

We had our ultrasound the other day and the baby is perfectly healthy measuring 4 days big :) we did find out the sex of newest addition and we feel so blessed to be having a baby girl. But I have had a feeling since day one that this baby is a boy and I feel like this still holds true. Any one else have the same feeling/intuition and was right?

  • How far along are you?

I guess there is a chance that it could be a boy depending on how early they told you, but I would like to think that they wouldn't tell you the sex unless they were 100% sure.

  • I've heard of people being told one and ending up with the other but very rarely. Don't know about intuition though.
  • I think a trained u/s tech takes this win over mother's intuition.

I had a feeling I'm having a girl. It's a girl! But I'd chalk it up to a lucky guess. I did have a 50% chance of being right, after all.
Awaiting our bundle of cute chaos.

Yea Ive heard of this too... but back when my mother was having children. I havent heard of this happening to anyone who was told at their anatomy scan in recent years, that they were having one thing and ended up with the other.

I mean if OP is really a FEB '15, and had her ultrasound the other day, she is well past the stage where the ultrasound would be wrong. We are all at least 16 weeks at this point right.

  • I like science and technology. Intuition *might* be a real thing but it doesn't seem to have as good of a track record. I'd place money on your intuition being wrong, but like pps said, you might have had a dud of a tech.

  • I had an intuition I was having a boy and found out at 15 weeks it's definitely a boy. I don't think they would have told you the sex unless they were sure but I could be wrong.
  • I have two friends in the past 4 years that have been told one sex and ended up with the other at birth. So it CAN happen, it's just really rare.

You are right anything CAN happen...  I think people need better doctor offices. lol

LOL yeah, I'm just glad neither of those practices are even in the same state where I am.
One was told girl at 17 weeks. Then at 38 weeks had a growth u/s. BAM - boy.
The other was told boy at 15 weeks, went by that and delivered a girl.

I think both were done at those early boutique u/s places, so that may have been part of the problem. That's why I'll never have one of those done.

This makes much more sense to me.

  • The mistake is most common thinking it is a girl and having a boy. I've had it happen to three friends, and every time it was determined around 20 weeks at the doctor's office. Is getting a second ultrasound an option?
  • My last 3 have been girls, and I did have a "feeling" that they were girls prior to the u/s. It wasn't from day 1 though. I got that "feeling" a couple weeks prior to the u/s. But, as another pp said, I did have a 50% chance of being right. No real feeling with this one yet. Maybe I won't get it this time, which is totally fine.

  • I think the very idea of a hunch or intuition is that it is not really based on anything at all. It is not 100% accurate, or even 51% accurate. It's just a feeling.

The ultrasound, on the other hand, is going by a visual of the babies genitals. There is still a chance they can be wrong so if it is really important to you you should get another one done at one of those elective places. I always think there is a chance they are wrong unless you had a blood test until you see the baby.

We aren't finding out but from day one I sort of thought boy. Not based on anything and a little girl would be so lovely. Will see in about 5 months!

  • I had an ultrasound with DD at 14 weeks with my doctor (not a trained US tech). We asked him to take a guess, he said boy. My instinct kept saying girl. At my anatomy scan it was a girl.
  • How far along when you had the scan? I had a private one done at 16 weeks and was told girl, I was completely shocked because I also thought it was a boy. Found out after the scan that it is only 80% accurate at 16 weeks. I go for anatomy scan at dr office this Friday. ..can't wait to know for sure :-)

Actually, statistics say you only had a 49% chance of being right.  Apparently the boy to girl ratio is 51% to 49%.... The potato household is beating the odds, apparently.  ;)

Hmm, I was right with odds lower than previously thought?

    What are my Powerball odds?

  • I had an intuition with both kids. I just knew from the start. BUT it was the anatomy scan and various pictures of their junk that finalized the whole deal. I'd go with the results of the anatomy scan. You're far enough along where the genitalia is usually pretty distinguishable.

  • With DD I swore up and down I was having a boy. Then BOOM vagina right there on the A/S.

With this LO I kept thinking it was a boy. The chinese gender predictor and a pee gender test from CVS all said boy. Today we had an ultrasound confirming boy.

I don't know if I had an intuition I just wanted a boy really badly.

  • I have a friend who was told girl at A/S and then a few weeks later found out it was a boy at a growth scan. It can happen, but I would still trust the tech over intuition.

  • My cousin had 3 ultrasound saying boy. She delivered a baby girl 2 weeks ago.
  • I feel like your cousin is the rare exception; but most people are typically the rule. Trust your doctor. They went to school for a very long time & kept all their brain cells studying while the rest of us destroyed them at keggers. Haha.

I mean, yes, it does happen. My friend and his wife were told they were having a girl, and it ended up being a boy, which, if they're ever wrong, is usually how it goes. However, it is pretty rare that they're wrong.

If you feel strongly and it's going to bug you for the rest of your pregnancy, I would go spring for an extra ultrasound at a later date.

But I just wanted to share that I thought my first kid was going to be a boy -- I sincerely didn't want one more than the other, I just kinda thought it'd be a boy. And it was a girl on the ultrasound and a girl in real life, and I took that as my first lesson that kids are surprising, and that I don't really have a mother's intuition... it was a good lesson for me to take to heart!

Not to be harsh, but just saying that if you're not right here, it won't be the last time you're not right about something you feel strongly about -- that just ends up being a big part of parenting. :)

  • My mother "just knew" and had convinced herself that she was having a boy. Only my grandmother thought I was a girl. My mom didn't even want to have an a/s because she was "having a boy". So then D-day comes along and surprise! Grandma was right and I am not a boy!

I have been saying since I joined this board back in June that I am pretty sure I am having a girl, but not solely based on a gut feeling, I do have some scientific theory and genetics to back up my suspicions.

    1) All the first borns on my mother's side of the family have been girls, without fail for 4 generations now.

    2) All the first borns on my hubbys side of the family have been girls, with the exception of hubby and his half brother, for 5 generations. His aunts all came first, they all had girls first, his half brother has all girls, all his oldest first cousins are girls; you see a pattern here!

    3) Yes I have had some "intuition" if you will, that I am having a girl, but am taking that with a grain of salt because I don't physically KNOW yet.

    4) Our NT scan specialist said our baby has an 80% chance of being a girl, however, there is still that 20% margin for error.

So, do I FEEL like I am having a girl? Yes I do, BUT it isn't strictly because of my "intuition". I do have some science and genetic theory behind my "feeling". However, I won't truly know until my a/s in October, and I would trust the judgement more so of the people who are trained at discovering the sex, rather than my own "intuition" as my mother has proven that a "mother's intuition" can be absolute bullshit.

  • If I were you, I would try to do some intentional bonding, picturing your baby as a boy and dreaming of boys names. Talking to your little boy and making plans will help your brain to switch into getting-ready-for-boy mode.

I know in my dreams my baby is always a girl, but I think it is because I am a girl. :-) My dream baby looks suspiciously like me. :-)

  • When I had my first, the girl I was in the room with refused to hold her baby boy because she was told that she was having a girl. Frankly I thought that was a bit drastic, but she literally cried for the whole day. I was able to be moved but seriously US Techs aren't perfect, they do make mistakes so who knows. My doctor said they aren't 100% so I guess you could always be right.
