Baby cold?

I've noticed the past 24hours that DD seems to have a runny nose (not horrible), & she has been sneezing a bit more often. Other than that she is acting like her normal self, not fussy, very happy & playful. She is laughing & jumping around like crazy in her bouncer this very moment.

Do I just let her be? Call the doctor? Get some cold med?

Re: Baby cold?

  • Maybe I under react but I would not call the doctor for a cold. There's nothing they can do for it; it just has to run its course. Now if your LO stops eating as much or gets diarrhea or something where you're worried about dehydration, that definitely warrants more monitoring.
Fwiw, my LO also had a cold at the moment. Try a humidifier in lo's room and snot sucker/bulb aspirator if needed. But generally if baby is happy, they're not feeling too bad.

  • I typically don't post, just lurk, but my LO woke up sneezing and with a runny nose on Wednesday. I took him in just to be safe and he had bronchiolitis. I had to give breathing treatments via a nebulizer every 6 hrs until Friday and now it is on an as needed basis. He has no idea he is sick and is his normal self. The nurse said that at this age, they really don't know they're sick. Also, his pedi said that we have to be very careful with colds at this age b/c it can go to their lungs quickly (in his case, the day his symptoms started). I would take her in to be safe.
  • I would only call if LO starts acting fussy or has trouble breathing. The doctor can't do anything for a cold, and most babies can get over a cold just fine. My LO just got over his first cold.

  • My LO has had probably 3 colds (she's in daycare). As long as breathing is fine I wouldn't worry too much. Just use bulb syringe, humidifier, saline if needed. Theres no cold medicine for a baby this age. I took her in once because she was starting to cough some and sounded like she had lost her voice and daycare thought she was wheezing (she wasn't), but she was fine. I mostly just wanted to make sure she didn't have an ear infection
  • thanks all... she's still a little stuffy but acting completely normal still. I've been using the snot sucker outter thing & that is helping.
