Has anyone else ever had this? Holy crap my boob hurts. It's like a shooting, stabbing pain that's worse when I'm pumping or full. I started Monistat on my nipples. Hoping to God it works.
I'm just getting over a bout with Thrush in me and the LO. We took Nystatin. Mines gone right now but i only had it in the right breast so I pump that one and nurse LO from the left, until his clears up. I don't want to pass it back and forth again! And yes it hurts!! I spent 3 nights in tears before it started to feel better. I noticed that no breast pads and as little clothing as possible over the nipple help immensely. Also when your done nursing/pumping express a bit of milk rub it on your nipple and let it air dry if possible before applying your cream. Hope this helps! Good luck. Pain is temporary!

Did you get pain in your entire breast too? My nipple is really sensitive, but it's the shooting pain through the breast that's the worst.
I didn't have thrush, I had mastitis with yeast covering some nipple pores, however I read somewhere to do vinagar rinses on your nipple after feeding. After everytime i pumped or fed I'd put one tablespoon vinagar in one cup of hot water and dangled my nipple in it for a minute. Since I also had mastitis sometimes I'd take just a cup of hot water and dangled my nipple in that instead of a vinagar rinse(the hot water no vinagar I'd dangle them longer). If you're going to use breast pads, get some cloth breast pads.
I have had this several times. I actually found that disposable breast pads worked best for me, but I had to change them after every feeding. Also, my doctor was very specific about what fungal cream to use on my nipples, and recommended the one with clotrimizole as the active ingredient. You can find it in the athlete's foot section of the store. It took about a week to clear up last time while simultaneously treating the baby with Nystatin.
My sympathies. Like you most of my pain was inside the breast. I took a 10 day course of diflucan and used a prescription nipple ointment called apno in addition to baby taking nystatin. We also constantly washed clothes/burp cloths in hot water and sterilized after every feeding/bump session. I ate yogurt and took probiotics (I received four courses of antibiotics in labor because of strep b). On the bright side it hasn't come back!
anything you can do to prevent/avoid thrush and mastitis???
Mastitis: nurse frequently to keep breasts from becoming overly full and clogging up your milk ducts. Also, some women are sensitive to more restrictive bras (underwire, sports bra) and their ducts will easily become clogged, potentially leading to mastitis. So safer to avoid those styles in the beginning, especially as your supply regulates.
Thrush: It's caused by an overgrowth of yeast (I had a nasty case of it with my first) so eating a healthy diet low in processed sugars and grains (two of the big things yeast feeds on) helps your body keep it at bay. Also, taking a good probiotic to build good bacteria in your gut. They also have probiotics for baby.
Hope this helps some! I had horrible cases if both with my furdt and am trying to avoid them like the plagues this time around!
Also, if you do have thrush, "all purpose nipple ointment" or APNO is a must. It will help with that terrible, shards of glass coming through your nipple pain. Make your doctor give you a prescription for it. You can find the "recipe" for it on Dr. Jack Newmans website (a world renowned Canadian doctor who specializes in lactation help) if your doctor isn't familiar with it.
Sorry this was so long, I just know from experience how terrible both of these are and don't want anyone else to suffer!

@zoegirlTX another thing I was told to prevent it - always dry your nipple off thoroughly after lo is done nursing. I wasn't doing this - I would let him hang out using my boob as a pillow since he usually falls asleep right after nursing. I started to get the bad shooting pains and I was suspecting it could be thrush based on how my nipples looked, too - but I started drying them off immediately and changing my breast pads more often and that did the trick!
Can you have thrush with normal appearing nipples and just breast pain? I have been having the shooting pains also, and I hate pumping because it makes me sore afterwards. If I didn't have to start pumping I wouldn't be. I was going to call the LC at the hospital and bring in my pump and see what is going on, but this thread is making me think.
